What do you do with half built kits you will NEVER finish?

Title pretty much say it all.

Personally, the stuff I will never finish or even don't like any more is turned into practice pieces.

See ya

I usually put them away in the hope that I will finish them "sometime in the future" & generally speaking will get back to them.

On saying that, I do have one recurring nightmare that's been relegated to the "future shelf" on more occasions than I care to remember - I will probably scrap it eventually, just might get back to it, might smash it up, or might finish with the care it deserves? Thats why I put them on "future shelf" - you just never know.

"...half built kits that you will never finish"?

What's that? Huh?

I finish or have finished 99.9% of kits that I start. If something snafu's me for a few weeks of more, I wait until I can get back at it with vigor.

I almost never even start a new kit until the current one is done. The only one I can remember doing that to was Italeri's Marder H. I wanted to detail the interior, but lacking adequate reference resources, I bought the very-similar Dragon offering in order to cop the details in the interior. It's in "build suspension", carefully packed in its box, until I feel like tackling it.

I think that the key is to pick your next build carefully, and have a "plan"--possible colors, desired level of detail, reference materials, etc. If you have a goal in mind, it seems to help me see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Half built kits become parts sources for Sci-Fi builds.

I've only got four kits that I haven't finished.

Revellogram P-38J - just ran out of steam on it.

Academy P-38F - Lab swept it off the table when he had a radar dish on his head, then proceeded to accidentally stomp on it. Beyond saving, except a few pieces like the Ultracast seat. The rest is now a paint mule.

Monogram P-47 - Was having a blast with this kit until the decals went seriously screwy. So bad that I'd have to completely strip the kit and start over. Maybe one day...

ICM LaGG-3 - Lost one of the rear cockpit windows to the concrete monster. Never have managed to find it. It's funny...I was planning to build it without the canopy, since the glass in those things was so awful they often as not just took it off, but that little bit of side glass HAS to be there. And it's what went missing. The thing is still in the box, being sad.

It's rare that I just start a kit and then put it away. I've found that if I can power through to the priming stage, everything usually goes fine. Unless I try to use 20-year-old decals in god knows what condition...

...I just keep telling Manny that I'll finish it later... Wink

OK, so other than stuff that I am dragging my feet on, a seriously "I'm not gonna finish it" kit, I've had two & they just went back into the box & re-stashed, hopefully to be taken out & finished at some point.

I try to finish everything I start,if a kit frustrates me it usually goes in the garbage and a lot of parts are go into the spares box, sometimes I sve a kit for weathering practice also.

Stick it back in the box, shelve it and wait until my skills catch up with my plans.

If I have concluded I won't finish them I give em away or throw em away.

After all, if you have decided you are not going to finish it, the reason is likely because it sucks in some fashion right?

I tend to ditch my garbage.

I haven't had many that I will "never finish."  Almost all of the ones set aside incomplete are going to be done some day.  in fact, a lot of them are now in what I call the "priority stash" to be worked on at the same time as more recently started projects.

As for those few that I know will never be finished, any potentially-useful parts are put aside for some as-yet-undetermined use later.  The engines from an "Anakin's Podracer" kit I gave up on years ago recently became add-ons for a recent project, so these things can come in handy eventually.

There is also one other use for some of these: the "crash-test dummy" as I call it.  One example is a half-built Millennium Falcon kit someone gave me that I decided was too much work to actually salvage.  I've used that to test and practice several techniques when I've been reluctant to commit a new kit ( especially with the higher prices over the past few years ) to experimentation.

[/quote]If there is some kind of framing, you could use Testor`s clear parts glue/ window maker. That stuff is awesome for making little windows...you have to kinda drag it across the opening so that there is a thin film covering the hole. You can build up layers too and it`ll dry crystal clear. It will work for larger openings but it`s a lot tougher to stretch it over the opening. It reminds me of the bubbles the kids have...the way the soap looks on the little dipper ring...lol. I lost my bomb aimer`s window on the Betty and used the window maker with a piece of clear plastic to back it up...looks better than a gaping hole...[:D

Thought about that, but it's open on one side (which I could frame in with some styrene strip easily enough), relatively large (about the size of my pinky nail), follows a rounded contour and, thanks to the ICM plastic, has to be very thick. I may try to fix it up one day (been eyeing cutting up a 20oz coke bottle to make it happen), but just don't have the burning desire at the moment.
