disolving glued bonds
Posted by satch_ip on Sunday, August 7, 2011 12:12 PM

Hypothetically, if one glued parts upside down with Tamiya thin cement, is there any way to break those bonds without breaking the parts?  Just sayin' ya know?  Not that I would do anything as dumb as that....Embarrassed

Dunno about Tamiya, but I use Testor's Pink-label...  It disolves itself (and Testor's Black bottle) pretty good...

I just load a pointed brush with cement,  touch it to the joint(s), and work it loose...

Unless you have an actual seam, like gluing two motor halved together, you're pretty much stuck with dissolved plastic. Depending on how much glue you used, you melted part A to part B. If you have a seam to work with, use a #11 Exacto blade and slice carefully down the seam. If not, you're only going to deform and melt more of the parts by applying more glue--but you MIGHT work it loose, like Hans said?

What'd ya glue? I mean, what might someone have glued together? Whistling

With Dragon instructions, someone might be inclined to glue these upside down...

Ahh, yes--do you mean those tow shackles? That's an easy fix!

Pry 'em off or better yet, cut them off with a fine razor saw blade, and the sand the area smooth. Sand the back of the shackle plate off and then simply cut a piece of say, something like .040 thickness styrene rod in the appropriate width to remake the shackle plate there with the bolt on the bottom and top. Replace the bolts with cut sprue rod.

You should be able to save the "meat" of the piece.
