thoughts/experience with old Aurora 1/88 Beech 18?
Posted by Michael Stephens on Sunday, October 30, 2011 3:29 PM

First post but long time FSM reader, so forgive me if I'm opening an old topic.  Didn't find any reference to this particular model.

I'm intrigued by the old Aurora 1/88 Beech 18 kit (ex-Comet) and wondered if anyone can tell me if it's worth the bother or if it needs severe work to be presentable.  i see it being part of a 1/87 civil diorama but don't want to pay the dear price being asked if it's fundamentally out of proportion or otherwise grossly inaccurate.  I can deal with assembly issues.  Heck, that's what most of our hobby is about, isn't it?

Any help appreciated,

Michael

Interested to know too, and I hadn't even known of the kit. Plenty of them in 1/72 you know.

On Old Model Kits they all cost $ 145- $ 165 which is a collector price but seems like a lot for a model with a 5" wing span to build.

MPM makes a 1:72 kit at a very reasonable price and it is a very reasonable kit to build.  Built one, felt it wasn't my best game, bought another but haven't got around to building it yet.  At the price and quality of the kit I'd definitely recommend it.  You don't need to pay sixty or seventy bucks for that subject.

MICHEAL , I am probably old enough to be your dad . I do remember this kit under the " COMET " label Years ago .Then about the middle fifties it came out as AURORA "BEECH-super 18 " It wasn,t bad as such. It was well molded and the paint pattern was engraved into the surface , BUT , not the panels . It had clear windows and a clear cockpit windshield unit .There was a bulkhesd to install so you couldn,t see down the length of the plane when it was built .The landing gear was very delicate but survived a ham handed pre- teen guy . I made many flights over the flower garden " JUNGLE " until it was missing so many parts the only flight left was a FLAMING crash into the "AMAZON JUNGLE " no survivors, including my backside . I burned one of dads prize dwarf roses .! what did I know ? Anyway I remember it fondly .I don,t know what the price is now , but , it was very pleasurable in the many variations I built over the years . I would say, if the thing is molded as back then , take a trip back in time and build it just for the sheer fun of it .          tankerbuilder

Thanks for your feedback and reminiscence!  As stated in OP, I was interested in this old kit because it could work well in a1/87 diorama, so despite much newer (and no doubt better) kits in 1/72 and 1/48, I think I'll take the plunge and see what the past looks like today.

Thanks again for the feedback and comments.
