I've always ignored those "fix with tape" call-outs. I just find them to be unnecessary steps, and usually have planned through those steps by that point.

I believe they are instructing you to hold the "grunt rails" in place while the glue dries. I've built the kit several times and they want you to use tape just to hold that hand rail so it stays parallel to the ground while the glue dries. There's also the upper portions of the lower hull that are tricky to keep in place while the glue dries.

Before some smart alec beats me to it. I meant clamps for clamping paper, not clamps made out of paper.

When I try to clamp with clothes pins they do not have enough pressure to really hold anything tight. I have started to use paper clamps.

That makes perfect sense now that I've read through the instructions again. The tip only shows up on pieces that would be impossible to hold in place with clamps or rubber bands. I usually just end up holding the pieces in position for a few minutes.

Thanks for the help and for the tip on the gun barrel.

A tip from Gino here: Use liquid glue to liberally 'butter' the 2 halves of the barrel, & squeeze together.

This is what I've always done to keep barrels and gun-tubes round... By squeezing the halves together, you get that "ooze" of melted styrene that's a as good a "weld bead" as anything and allows for scrapping and sanding while not getting a flat-spot on the tubes...

Hi & welcome.

Avoid cellophane tape, use ordinary masking tape, the adhesive is less problematic.

Tapes, clamps, clothes-pegs,  blue-tac, etc are used to hold parts together while the glue does its thing.

A tip from Gino here: Use liquid glue to liberally 'butter' the 2 halves of the barrel, & squeeze together.

Then use spring operated wooden clothes pegs as clamps to squeeze the halves together, object is to allow a little melted plastic to 'ooze' out & allow to dry completely.
Then use wet & dry 400 to 600 grade sandpaper to sand the 'oozed' plastic, taking care to keep the barrel round!  This will prevent that thin groove down the centre of the barrel,

There is no such thing as a dumb question, jus not asking & learning!

Fix with cellophane tape?
Posted by Tycho on Thursday, January 12, 2012 11:36 PM

Hello all. I'm new to modeling and am trying my hand at armor.

I'm building Tamiya's U.S. M60A3 105mm tank gun Item 35140. It's my first build of a Tamiya product and in the instructions on a couple of pieces there's a note saying to "Fix with cellophane tape".  Am I still supposed to glue those pieces down using the tape to hold the piece in the correct position or is the tape supposed to suffice?

My gut is telling me to glue it down but I'd hate to get halfway through and realize that I had screwed up.
