Eric-those newspapers are a treasure....not only the front page headlines but the stories within the paper.  I just don't want to see you on Pawn Stars in a few weeks. Wink

Nah, those guys are rip-offs. LOL

They aren't going anywhere, trust me. I feel blessed to have them.

Thanks Bill. I wish he had more. I thought he had a bunch off magazines from the war, but I can't seem to find them.

I worked at a newspaper for 22 years and wonder how far back spot color originated?

Oh, I can imagine that the significance of the day's events had a little play in the decision-making process... it must have been an exciting time to be in the newspaper buildings when those events were announced.

I'm happy that you have those to keep.

Good point Dre. I wonder if the significance of the events had anything to do with it.

Pearl Harbor, the 9/11 of that era.

Cool treasure trove.  I find it really interesting that the paper used spot color on the front and at that time in the industry- I haven't seen any other papers of that era that used color in their headlines.

Very nice find. It's too bad they had been folded but still, they're irreplaceable. Congratulations.

I hear you Karl. The VE and VJ Day appear to be complete papers. I enjoy the ads as well as the side stories.

I also have Saddam captured. I wish I would have collected others over the years.

Cool story Gordon. Thanks for sharing that.

I've managed to save a few papers over the years. I have the front page from theOregonian for the Hostage release from Iran, many copies of 9/11, Saddam's death, The Iraq War among others.

Thanks for sharing them Tiger, those are nice collection pieces of history. Not too long ago I was looking for replicas (Titanic style) with no luck Crying

During my career as a newspaper reporter I always saved  stories I had written just in case I might have to refer to them sometime in the future. I used the express or priority mail boxes from the post office. I have been retired for a few years but I still have the old newspapers.  The ones which mean the most to me are the stories I wrote about World War II veterans. The other day I received a call from the editor of the local newspaper about a story I wrote in 1995 about an area resident listed as MIA in Korea. His A-26 was  shot down on a misssion in North Korea.  I dug out that article and made a copy of it for him. Keeping the newspaper out of direct light is the secret to preserving them.

Sprue-ce Goose

Great seeing those old papers.

How were they stored?

I have a few from that era but they became brittle and yellow during storage before I acquired them.

I must presume your newspapers were stored away from direct sunlight and - perhaps oxygen- for much longer.

It took a little digging, but they were in the basement in his den. I was lucky to find them. He's been deceased for 6 years and I haven't really gone through all his stuff, but I remembered they were there.

I love reading old newspapers like this. Especially the battles that I've studied or read about. It almost makes you feel like you know something they don't. Which of course you do.Big Smile

Its also interesting to read about other stuff besides the war that was going on.

My WW II newspaper headlines
Posted by tigerman on Sunday, February 5, 2012 5:27 PM

Sorry, there is nowhere to appropriately put this, but I wanted to share. These are actual newspapers that I picked up at my father's house. Most are front covers, but a couple are complete newspapers and in great condition for the age. All relevant headlines such as VE day, VJ Day and Pearl Harbor.

It's really a kick to read these. The type is so small in them and I had worked at a newspaper for 22 years. Really bulky width wise too. There is a a subheading on the VJ Day page about the loss of the Indianapolis.
