Anything of major note or concern? I have a 1/144 corsair that says it's a 4 but I want to build it as Pappy's 1.
The only real exterior differences on the F4U-4 from the F4U-1D were a scoop fitted in the lower lip of the cowling, giving the aircraft's nose a slightly different profile, and a four-bladed propeller. The Dash One-D had a three-bladed prop, so you'll need that for "Pappy's Corsair". The F4U-1D also had a pair of canopy frames that's gone from the Dash Four canopy, although late-model F4U-1Ds had the fully "Blown" and frameless canopy..
The Dash Four B and C-models also had 4 20mm cannon vs the six Fifties of the Dash Four, so you'll need to alter the wing's leading edge to show MGs if you have one with the four 20 mike mikes.. Plus, if the model has rocket stubs, you'll want to remove them..
Boyington flew whatever Corsair was available on the line that day though... The famous "Lucybelle" #86 was done up for publicity-photos. That particular Corsair was actually based at New Caladonia and never assigned to VMF-214. It didn't even see any combat time, according to one source I have..
Thanks Hans. Looks like this kit has a little of both. It's a prebuilt F-toys. It has the correct guns and blown canopy but has a chin scoop and 4 blade. No rocket mounts either.
Speaking of the bent wing beast, what is meant by "birdcage"?

Canopy framing. On the Corsair it generally applies to the F4U-1:
I always thought there was more going on between the -1D and -4. How come nobody's ever done a cowl/prop conversion for the Tamiya -1D?

The birdcage Corsair had a lot of framework to the canopy.
The -4 also had a different exhaust arrangement, with stacks coming out on the side of the fuselage & underneath @ the rear of the cowling. Early -4's had a rounded front windscreen similar to the -1A/-1D, but later production versions switched to the flat armored glass panel in the center.
