Cadet Chuck

Clueless friends and family members who have no idea of the work and skills that go into modeling.  "Oh, that's nice.....so what else is new with you?"

God yes, it's so annoying
or when your family act's like building is something for kids and telling you that you need to grow up, like they're is no skill involved or something.

Flattering: A kind remark or compliment from a member of this forum, or my local IPMS club friends.

Unflattering:  Clueless friends and family members who have no idea of the work and skills that go into modeling.  "Oh, that's nice.....so what else is new with you?"

Flattering, A modeller telling how good it looks, even it is to say in a way of, look at how far you have become.
Especially when you've just tried something new, makes you feel extra good about the fact that you've tried.
Also, somebody you look up to (as a modeller) saying how good your model looks.

Least flattering, I'd have to go with FightnJoe on that one, I have had the same experience, on another forum
you had about two guys who were just downright insulting every model that I had build in the past year in just a few posts. That just after having tried my first airbrush model using that paint jar thing from Revell.
I left that forum after those posts, after saying my thaughts on them ofcourse.
Also other modellers being plain rude against you, I understand that not every model you build is a perfect resemblence, but being rude and saying that it looks like crap isn't something that should be done.

Most people here are trying to learn new things, and then be proud of what they made, breaking something off where somebody has sometime put his love and work into is something I just can't stand.

Darn, you beat me to this one. Smile

Most flattering: having a model published in FSM online gallery.

Least flattering: needs more rust, too much rust, the real thing has one rivet more...

My wife likes the final result, but does not like the process, too messy and smelly.

I don't look at a lesser quantity of responses to a build as discouraging. Comments many times do seem to be influenced more by subject matter and less so by the quality of the build itself. I'm not saying this is carved in stone, but I have noticed it from time to time. Nothing wrong with it - we are a diverse group with diverse tastes, and I wouldn't feel discouraged because of that.

flattering:  it is incredibly flattering when another model builder looks at your work and says how good it looks.  they describe the wonderful things they see in what you have done.  i have had this on occasion, my only thought was were they looking at the same thing i was.

least flattering:  to be honest even that which would be considering downright insulting could be used to improve.  the least flattering comments i have had on one of my builds was when other forum members got into a flareup over some criticism of what i had done and that was done after i had made the comment that i would use the comment given as a way to improve.  that makes it more difficult to justify to myself to post pics of what i am working on.  not that i may be critiqued but that members can and in some cases do use that as a way to air any personal grudges they may have.

Least flattering: Working hard and nobody looking at anything or posting!  i always try to branch out and look at other masterpieces it sucks when they dont return the favor

I haven't posted enough to really be critiqued on.

Most: I love the camouflage. (even though I'm not usually happy with it)

Least: Nicely done.

Well, tell me what you liked? (I'm guilty of using that too, but not meant in a disparaging way. Sometimes I'm short of words)

*Edit, I just read another post and yes, little to no response on the build. That usually says people aren't that fond of it, or perhaps too lazy to reply.

Most Flattering- When i complete a long build and am congratulated on my work.

Least Flattering- when my sister looks at something that she knows nothing about and claims I don't do things correctly...

Most flattering - when someone brings up a build or a technique I've shared, completely unaided, in a completely separate thread. Means my build's made an impression!

Least flattering - "well done". The opposite of passion is indifference, so I guess I'd rather have someone spend time punching holes in my builds than offer a "oh, that's nice" and move on...

"What is the most flattering thing a fellow modeler can say about one of your builds?"

Oh... I suppose something like what others have posted, "It looks real good...., Like the way you did........, How did you do........?,

"And the most discouraging?"

So.... what is that?

The most flattering thing that could be said is...

"How did you do.... (fill in the blank) "

I think passing on a bit of knowledge is very rewarding. Yes

When a build inspires someone else to try that same subject, especially if that subject is way out of their comfort zone, is very flattering, as well as rewarding, for it also offers an opportunity to pass on tips and techniques to make that foray into uncharted territory an enjoyable experience for the first-timer.

"Can I use those WIP pics for reference?" would be nice to hear.

The most discouraging things are usually said by myself during the building process...

Yes

One non-flatering thing I will always remember is I had a lady ask how come I did not have smoke coming out of my chimney's on my ship!

Thad

Was the lady a fellow modeler?

Flattering: as per Panzerpilot - posting pics here and getting positive compliments from fellow modellers.

Non-Flattering: i recently went to an IPMS meeting, when i told my friend where i was going, he asked how the other "15 year old virgins were getting home".  Point of note: i'm not 15.

Manstein's revenge

What is the most flattering thing a fellow modeler can say about one of your builds?

And the most discouraging?

Real stories are welcomed...

The most flattering thing I can think anyone can say is " that looks great how did you do X? I will be trying that on my next build"

The most discouraging? Nothing really...if the comment is negative, I take it as a challenge, but I guess the most discouraging wouldbe posting a WIP or completed build and getting no comments at all. (Speaks volumes)

Manstein's revenge

That not flattering, seroiusly she is very supportive and checks out all of my work

the best is hearing good stuff from your fellow modelers on the forums, especially ones who don't comment a lot.Friends are really impressed when I show them all the parts of an unstarted kit, especially a DML,and they can't believe all those parts are in that little tank.

Flattering: Posting pics of a build on here and having people tell me it looks great, etc. Feels good, especially coming from fellow modellers.

Non flattering: I had a gal over to my place. She was very amused that I had a 1/16 Tamiya Tiger tank in my living room. Who cares. She wasn't a modeller anyway.
