Farewell My Friend...
Posted by PaintsWithBrush on Thursday, May 10, 2012 6:51 PM

Reggie

April 27, 1995-May 10, 2012

Our beloved Reggie moved on this afternoon. She was a remarkable and wonderful being that touched us dearly. Truly a ONCE IN A LIFETIME dog. We were able to spend her final few hours together enjoying the bright, sunny, 80 degree day. It's amazing how such a small being can leave such a large hole in one's world.

Goodbye my Reggie. Goodbye my dearest friend.

I'm so sorry for loosing her. She looked to be a very sweet dog. I know how you feel. We lost our black Lab Buddy last October to a very aggressive cancer that took him in a few days. We miss him a lot. He too was very special. For 12 years he gave us unconditional love. It's very hard to see a dear friend leave us that way but I'm sure she's over the rainbow bridge with my Buddy.

Very sad. That is a great pic of him. Those eyes say it all. Bettin' he's up there running around and havin' a great time with our Brutus (a 17-year friend and member of our family from my childhood). Only time I ever saw my dad ( a tough-as-nails former marine) lose it, when we had to put Brutus down as his kidneys finally failed the little guy - he would yelp at the slightest touch he was in so much pain, and his sight was completely gone. All these years later he's still in my thoughts nearly every day.

It's hard losing a furry frined. It killed me when I had to put my cat down after 20 years last fall. She was more devoted then some of my friends.

Do recall the good times, which I'm sure there was plenty.

My heart goes out to you.  I know what it feels like, we have had to put down several beloved cats and dogs over the last 25 years.  You never forget them and it's like losing a family member.

We have their cremated remains buried in our yard, with dog and cat pottery/ceramic figures marking their graves.  So in some way, they are still with us.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

My sincere sympathy for the loss of your companion. Pets occupy a unique place in our hearts that is probably as old as our relationships with other humans. Worse yet, they're not appliances - you don't just go out and get another one. We lost our "best dog" three years ago and there's not a day goes by that I don't think about her. Think on the many good times you had.

I have a soft spot for Dachsunds, and my heart goes out to you to lose such an adorable friend and partner.

Dogs are part of the family; part of your pack, and truer friends and companions than you will ever find on two feet. Perfect creatures, they. He was simply beautiful.

My day is darker knowing your Reggie is gone. Crying I send my deepest sympathies. Embarrassed

Ouch, I'm so sorry to hear about Reggie. It's amazing how they can go so fast from a pet to a member of the family.

I once heard some place that a kid asked his preacher if he would see his beloved dog in heaven (shortly after the pet had passed on).  The preacher told him, that since animals had no "immortal soul" that, no the dog would not be in heaven.  What garbage!, and how to kill a kid's belief in a compassionate God.  Most animals I know have more SOUL than most humans I know.  If heaven doesn't have a special place for beloved pets, than I don't wanna go there!

So sorry to hear about Reggie.  Our 4 footed friends are special!

My condolences...

It's tough to part with a pet, especially a good dog : (   I remember some years ago when we had to put "Lucky" to sleep, after 16 years. I had found her as a stray in the woods, as a tiny puppy. She beat red mange and was a great doggie.

Our sincerest thanks for all your kind words. I knew today at lunch was going to be a rough moment because it would be the first time I would never see those big, expectant eyes looking up at me from under the glass tabletop. The way she would just look, knowing her nosh was on the way, watching every movement of my hand.

She was an amazing trooper all the way to the end. I've been looking at photos most the day and am so glad I decided to shoot a bunch on her birthday last month. Just trying to decide which ones to distribute among the family.

Again, thanks to all.

My condolences to you and your family. We have a pair of dogs, one is a little mutt terrier about 2 yrs old and the other is a beautiful cocker spaniel that my wife rescued from the pound. We've had her about for about 2 years and they estimated her age to be about 10 at the time. She was blind in one eye and recently lost vision in the other. Going up stairs is now a chore for her. She may not be with us for many more years, but at least we know she will have had a good life in the end.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Over the years I have had to have my heart broken with the passing or putting down a beloved pet.My last two were my PARROT-"BUBBLES " and " LILI the daschund, that  the bird actually played with.Less than two months apart. I do miss those eyes,as you said, looking thru the glass tabletop ,knowing the treat was coming soon, and the bird falling off the edge and chasing the dog around my feet.Gosh , you know ,they WERE members of the family. My heart goes out to your loss.It never gets easier until you have nothing but the good things left of the memories.      TANKERbuilder

Paints,

Everyone who has ever lost a dog empathizes with you.  You always know where you stand with a dog.  God's best work, IMHO.  She's just gone on to make sure the way is safe for you, that's all, and she'll be there when you are.

Very sorry to hear of your loss.

Our furry friends are more then just pets, they become members of the family and that make their loss that much more painful.

She looks like one great companion, she must of been a great dog.
Saying that I know how you feel wouldn't be right, but I understand how it is to lose a pet you love.
I lost one of my cat's a couple of months ago, and I still light a candle and think about her every day.

I love animals more than I love humans, and it is amazing how our pets leave footprints all over our heart, I hope that she may be happy, whereever she may be...

My heart goes out to you, sincerely, Dion.

No Dogs In Heaven"

An old man and his dog were walking down a hot, dusty road lined with a beautiful white fence on both sides. As they walked along, the old man and his dog became very thirsty and tired.

Soon, they came to a gate in the fence where, on the other side, they saw a nice grassy, wooded area surrounding a cool clear pool of fresh water. "Just where a thirsty 'huntin' dog and a man would like to rest!" thought the old man. But there was a sign over the gate that read "No Dogs" so they walked on.

Further on, they came upon a man in flowing white robes standing just inside a strong iron gate across a path that led to a beautiful, sunny meadow with a cool clear stream running through it.

"'Scuse me Sir," said the old man, "My dog and I have been on this road all day. Mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?" "Of course!" The man said. "Come on in and rest. You look thirsty and tired." The old man said, "We sure are!" and started through the gate with his dog.

The gatekeeper stopped him. "Sorry, you can come in but your dog can't come with you. "You see, this is Heaven, and dogs aren't allowed here. He has to stay out here on the road." "What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs?" said the old man. "Well, if he can't come in, then I'll stay out here on the road with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life and I won't desert him now."

"Suit yourself," said the gatekeeper, "but I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his place. He'll promise you anything, but dogs can't go there either. If you won't leave that dog on the road, you'll spend all Eternity on the road with him. Better if you stay here."

"Well, I'm stayin' with my dog," replied the man and he and the dog walked on. Gradually, the fence became more and more faded and rundown until they finally reached a spot where the boards fell away completely leaving a gap. Another man dressed in old, ragged clothes sat just inside the broken fence under a shady tree.

"'Scuse me Sir," said the old man, "My dog and I have been on this road all day. Mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?" "Of course!" The man said. "Come on in and rest. There's some cold water here under the tree. Make yourself comfortable."

The old man paused, "but what about my dog? Can he can come in, too? The man up the road said dogs weren't allowed here, and they had to stay on the road." The other man answered, "Well, you look pretty tired and thirsty. Would you come in here and rest if you had to leave that dog?"

"No sir!" the old man replied, "A glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now but I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too. I didn't go to Heaven because my dog couldn't come with me, so I sure as how ain't about to go to Hell without him neither."

The man smiled and said, "Welcome to Heaven, and bring your dog!" The old man exclaimed, "You mean this is Heaven? And my dog can come with me? Then why did that fellow down the road say they weren't allowed in Heaven?" The man replied, "That was the Devil and he gets all the souls who are willing to give up a life-long companion for small comfort because they think it will make their lives a little easier."

The man continued, "They soon find out their mistake, but, then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. God wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, He created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"

My condolences on your loss Paintswithbrush.  Reggie looks like a very sweet pup, and she was lucky to have you as a companion.  Take solace in the fact that she had the best life she possibly could have, because she found her once in a lifetime person as well.  There's nothing like the unconditional love of a great dog.

P38jl, thanks for sharing that story, its perfect.
