Manstein's revenge

 the doog:

Never did, nor joined a Group Build, and I don't really have interest. I really rather prefer to build for the whole of the forum members in whatever genre I'm in. I think you have a larger audience, and to be honest, I don't know how many people who DON'T participate in one Group Build or another actually ever look in on the GB forums, because honestly, there's so much chit-chat going on sometimes between a few guys that it's hard to find actual knowledge that you can really use.

Sometimes in the past, some of our more-frequently-posting members "disappear" for a while, and they're doing GBs. When you don't have a lot of time--like I don't NOW--you don't have time to engage two forums and wade through all the posts when one guy doesn't post for like, three weeks, and you really wanted to see what he did with that model in the GB. In the regular "Armor" forum for instance, you can just find one person's post much easier by looking for the thread that they started.

Some very good points, and the really popular ones are nearly impossible to follow because of the number of posts and the length the thread becomes after awhile...I think the draw to some is that having a group of guys in it with you helps you to stay motivated and on task---sometimes even through a little peer pressure.  Sorta like having a work-out buddy...

Like everything else in life, there's good and bad aspects to it...

Yes, to the bold line. It's like running a race and petering out before the finish, only to have your buddy egg you on that last 100 yards "You can do it!"

I also like the share of knowledge. I haven't been in a single GB that I didn't learn something and in most cases, tons of new information or techniques.

Since I rarely get o see my friends in the hood anymore, it's nice to hang out with a group a guys from all around the globe. I enjoy the comradery.

Hadn't thought of it that way, but you are right, as far as "dropping in" goes. If I'm following along, no problem, there is info to be had. But you are correct - even GBs that I am either "about to start" or "finished but checking in on...", if I go for 3,4,12 days & come back - WOW! some of them can be hard to wade through.

I held off on joining a group build for a long time, but I have since broke that fruit.  I usually join one at a time, maybe two if I am close to finishing a kit. I like the GB's cause you get a cool badge. Wink

No really I like them cause most people in there are having the same intrest at the moment that I am having so it works for me until I move on to a new fad.

I belong to two iPMS chapters here in Denver so I bring my builds to the monthly meetings.  At the Rob Wolf / Denver one, sometimes they take pictures of all the Show and Tell models and put them on their website. So you can see some of my models there.  We don't take pics at the Front Range Club and I've never started a web site for that club.  So I show my work all the time to folks there.  I guess living in a large metro area, I get plenty of real feedback on my work and I can admire the other modelers work in the flesh as well. Colpar Hobbies also has a display case where club members can display their work.  Nice of them.  Great store as well.

Oh, ok.. Didn't know all that... Sorry I asked, Doug...

HA! The answer is probably "too many", but sometimes I need a little push from the others (either just seeing others' progress or someone giving me the gears). In no particular order...

  • Falklands Anniversary....
  • Too many engines...
  • Airfix GB...
  • Flanker GB...
  • As mentioned by Goose, Saab GB...
  • And several more that I have expressed interest in but not yet laid down a hard commitment to. Embarrassed

Hi Wayne.  I think I'll haul in that big ole German mine resistant vehicle that RPM did.  I built it several years ago, way before the new Ming kit came out.  It's the biggest wheeled beast I have. Wasn't really all that bad a kit.  I can usually get even the alleged dogs hacked together. Ha!   See you at the meeting.  As we had the club contest last month, I have a double dose of  show and tell, at least 4 or so new models done in the last 2 months.  I'm nearly as bad as Terry T. in production.

Just the BIG SAAB GROUPIE GB hosted by Vance.

Between a severe backlog of necessary ongoing chores comprising:

woodworking (display case & new base) , metalworking ( machine rebuild and machine stand construction ), exterior painting,  gardening- late in building a raised bed for veggies currently sprouting,

one GB  is enough. Hmm

Ditto

Yeah I am in a similar way. I sign up for more than I can complete. Right now I want to say that I am part of at least 6 or so currently, running a couple more, and have joined far more than I have completed. Dont get me wrong, I love being part of these things, but there is far more temptation than time for me. And with the large stash I have, subject matter is not difficult at all. My biggest hurdle these days aside from build time is display space for the completed builds. My completion rate for GBs? Well, if I get 50% done on time its a good year...WhistlingWink

Five or Six, plus I'm hosting two...  (Monogram Mafia II and Diorama Contest).. And one unoffcial one in the Aircraft Hooch that seems to have dies (B-25 GB).

Sadly, I don't seem to make much progress in any of them, hence my propensity for doing cross-overs..  However, as you can see, I've finished three, plus Monogram Mafia I..  I join far too many though, but it always seems like a good idea at that time.. Guess I'm a "25%er"... Means I finish one outta four, lol.. (That might be a generous estimate, lol)

There's a couple that I'm in that haven't started yet, and/or have end dates far enough in advance that I've joined... Frankly, I think that joining all these Group Builds is getting outta hand, lol..

That said though, I think it's a really good way for new members to really get involved with the forum as well.. Many are shy about posting their work, feel that it ain't "good enough" or whatever, when they look at other's builds... Personally, joining a GB as a Nugget-member is a great way to build up confidince, add skill-sets, learn how (and where) to research, learn new or different techniques, pick up a few tips and tricks, and generally feel part of something, a team, and experience the comraderie of the group in a "Private" environment, where everyone's starting from box-opening on a particular kit or theme...

Back on topic, I do try to only join builds that feature kits I have on-hand though.. I TRY not to join a build that requires me to buy yet another kit (Although I still did it, dammit, and just last week... Thanks a lot, Manny)... But sometimes the theme is too enticing, so it's "C'mon Ebay!"... (Manny, thanks again...)

Ah, well..  As long as my wife stays outta the War Room when I'm working on one...

I participate in one at a time. I'm a pretty slow builder, especially when I get into painting and weathering.

I did post my Semovente for the Amore GB in the armor forum, because I imagine that not many non GB participants actually check out the forum regularly.

Yes, Big Cats starts in early September unless I get busy and can't run the thing.

I usually enjoy being in a GB because it is a great way to make friends and help others.  I am starting to loose count but I think I have been in 6 or 7 GBs for more than two years.  I have learned a lesson recently not to sign up for another until I FINISH my current build first.

Recently I have been having fun hosting Panzer III & Its Variants GB and it will end this summer so I am looking forward to sign up for something in the fall perhaps the Big Cats GB everybody was talking about.  Whistling

I just finished Andy's Panzer III Build,I'm signed up for The Grumman Ironworks Build, and I anticipate signing up for Tigerman's Big Cat's build in Sept.I must confess that I am signed up for a couple on Armorama also.

And yes, many have started new posts to showcase their group builds, many who are not involved in the group build ignore sorting thru the long group threads,so this gives others a chance to see their work.

how many group builds are you in
Posted by waynec on Saturday, May 26, 2012 5:54 PM
not sure if this is bragging or just sad. right now i finished one and am in 5 maybe 6 group builds. granted at least one is an overlap, maybe 2 depending if the ACHTRADEN II starts up and the rules. i like these because it gives me a deadline as long as there is a reasonable build time. it also makes me focus more on a couple of projects instead of flitting off. now, if my plane is drying i can switch to armor. sometimes i use it as an "excuse" to try something new and, given my eclectic stash, i usually don't have to buy a kit. sometimes i surprise myself with what is in there. i would ask if this is wierd but that would be a pot/kettle question in this group. also, when you finish a group build, say in armor, do you also open a new post in the srmor forum and post finished pics?
