Sprue Brothers website...
Posted by VanceCrozier on Friday, July 13, 2012 10:30 AM

....has been "upgraded". Haven't really had a chance to dig through it yet, but it certainly looks updated. searching their database seems to be working much quicker than before, also quicker to update the shopping cart. I sorta miss having your "cart contents" appear in the right-hand column though. I sorta used it to keep track of "things I'll buy next time..."

Good to know. Is it similar to Greatmodels?

Not sure as I can't remember the last time I was on Greatmodels' website. And it's filtered at my office anyway, assuming it's still up. Sprue Brothers however seems to beat the filter for some reason!

I was reading the release notes on their main page and it looks like they're doing a rewards program.  Something like $4 for every $200 spent.  I wonder if we can talk them into making it retro-active??

Yeah, finally got in.  However, it didn't recognize my previous registration so had to re-register.

Also, I don't like the a/c category being "Early flight to WWII" seems like it should be "thru" WWII.

But all in all it seems easier to get around.... I think.

Smooth move, changing their link without telling their customers.  Thanks for giving us the new one, Blueline.

Read the home page, they are unable to transfer old accounts to new system for security reasons.  Everybody has to open a new account.

I don't like it overall, but has some nice parts. The images are too small now. Looks like the site was designed for mobile. How many of their customers are doing mobile shopping? Strange choice considering the demographics... Works ok on my (Android) phone, but the images are still small on my (Android) 10" tablet. They are puny on my 26" PC screen, and I am thinking of getting a 27" with even higher resolution...

The SuperSpecials are not sortable by scale anymore, what the?

The images are small.

Search is strange... I looked for 1/48 Spitfire, then I filtered it by typing Academy in the Search Within box, plus sorted by price low to high (my favorite :):):) )and the first result is a canopy for the ICM kit, no Academy in sight. Oh, wait, Search Within and selecting the order don't work together in the same step, you have to first order, then do the Search Within. Then it works.

Filter by brand - this I like (cue Borat accent).

Did I say that the images are too small?

Sounds like they have screwed up big time, and will lose business because ot this.  Too bad, I have always liked ordering from them.

I'd say it's about as frustrating as the old site, only in different ways. And still less awful than most of the others.

Yep, I shoulda read the hoe page re account info! Embarrassed

Not like there are monthly payments to keep track of, and to be honest probably not a bad idea to purge stuff like that every so often. I'm liking it - a few changes which don't do a whole lot for me, but a great increase in speed of search. The smaller images actually do help with that a little bit. While I'd like larger images as well, I almost always do a little online research for the kits/AM that I am looking to buy before I ever get to a store now.

They ruined their site. They search functionality is horrendous. Hmm, I am in the mood to pick up a n A-10, haven't built one of those before. Lets see, I build in 1/72 for modern jets and there is no way to do that search. If I want to look at their offerings of any specific subject in a specific scale I have to wade through every offering they have of that scale in its era.

To find what 1/72 A-10 offerings they have I have to look through over 400 kits. The old site, while a bit clunky in its layout was much better in letting you get to what you wanted. I score this one a fail.

Why couldn't they have incorporated the old Great Models search into the new one?  I cant tell you how much extra stuff I bought  due to the list of other AM or books on the model you were buying.

Not trying to pick a fight, but I am also looking for a 1/72 A-10. I typed in "A-10 1/72" and it coughed up 17 responses, sorted by manufacturer: two  Hasegawa, two Hobby Boss, and two Revell, and the rest are accessories. Maybe they're tweaking as they go along, but it seems pretty straightforward to me.

Cheers

I tried that, particular method with a different model and came back with a frustrating result. Maybe its really context sensitive?

You mean the "advanced search" that they had before right?  I had no problem with a "scale + type" search, then you can filter by manufacturer from there. Looks like think the function is still there, just in a different format. I'm liking it for the quicker search response & navigation if nothing else.

Ahhh - just spotted something, they allow you to carry a wishlist attached to your account now. Probably a better option than me parking things in the "shopping cart" until I finally got around to making a purchase! Embarrassed

What do you mean they're too small? If you click on the item you want the next page opens with a decent sized image.
