Nice pics! I see they changed the outside of the silo a little from when I was there about 4 years ago. They used to have a semi-trailer parked over the silo so you wouldn't really even know anything was there. We did get to go down into the silo, and see the missle and controls etc. I was also very fortunate that one of those B-1B Bombers took off when I was there and it might have been the loudest plane I have ever heard. We lost sight of it in no time, but could still hear it for a while after. I love airplane noise so that was way cool!

As a friend who used to live off the end of one of the runways at Ellington AFB used to say:  "That's the sound of freedom!"

Riffraff, I like your avatar.  I used to own a Lucern Blue '72.  That view was a common sight when getting into the car to take a ride.

Would love to go there.  My father-in-law was a launch officer in the silos.

The diorama is nice but I disagree about one thing in it - the altitude of the raiders is too high - everything I've ever read and the few pics available from the Ploesti raid would indicate that the aircraft didn't fly over the smoke stacks, rather dodging around them at a much lower altitude (like maybe 50 to 100 foot agl!)

Pics from the South Dakota Air & Space Museum/ Minuteman Missile Historic Site

Back at the end of October, my grandmother died, so we had to take a road trip out to South Dakota for the funeral. On the way back, we were able to stop at the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and the South Dakota Air & Space Museum. The missile site was preserved after the SALT treaty talks dictated that most be destroyed, and is located just east of Wall, SD.  The museum is located on the edge of the Air Force base outside Rapid City. Anyway, here's some pics:

Overall view of the missile site:

Glass and steel enclosure covering the top of the silo. You can also take tours down into it, but they weren't operating that day. The conical object to the right is the hardened UHF antenna:

This was a pretty cool dio done by the local modeling club of the Ploesti raid:

Not sure what an EF-18 Growler was doing at an AF base, but there he was:
