Thanks GMorrison. PM is on the way. I have always been facinated with this type of plane. I guess they just "look like airplanes should look" to me.

For another interesting conversion project, this one is stuck in my mind as well. Terrific story.

Dana Kopher used to do a conversion set for the Heller kit. Here's a pretty good rundown, if you're interested:

The Mach 2 DC-4 is not a good kit at all.

The Heller/ Humbrol DC-6B is one of my favorite all time kits. I've built several.

Converting to a  -4 is pretty much as described. It would help to have drawings though.

Years ago I bought a DC-6 on eBay. When I got it there was a resin conversion set inside for the -4 and some instructions with 1/72 drawings.. I'd be happy to send you copies, as the company is long gone. Send me a PM.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I heard back from Mr. Sexton. He is sending this request to Revell Germany. Said they have had better success with airliners that they have had at Revell US. I suggested perhaps including parts to make either the military or civilian versions. So we will see. Good thing i'm still building my hobby room. Soooo very slow. I have 3 walls framed. One day, i may actually get to use the room and build a kit to completion!

The article was in the early '90s, IIRC, and I cut down a DC-6 to make a C-54. It's not that hard really. Cut out an inch or so in front of and behind the wings, shorten and round off the horizantals and vertical, shorten the nacelles, make round windows and add some props from a B-17 or B-24 and that's about it. There are some finer details and I don't think the author/builder used the existing cowls. Anyway, hope this little info helps.

I just ordered the Humbrol from Squadron, and have been looking for the others as well. Since i haven't built much in the last 30 years (except for creating the current stash - much to the wife's mild consternation), I can't see investing in the Mach2 offering of the DC-4.

I saw a Google reference to an article in FSM that seemed to be about the  conversion of the Humbrol DC-6B to a DC-4. Needless to say, searching the site did not produce results. Anyone know of this?

Also, I know Revell is sort of like Cousin Eddie in Christmas Vacation, but i like them. If i screw up it isn't a lot of money down the drain. I had e-mailed their customer support about re-issuing some kits and receive a pretty prompt reply that they would look into it. I don't put a lot of stock in those replys, but if enough folks e-mailed them, it might help. Told them a 1/72 series of the Classic Prop Airliners (DC-3, -4, -6, -7, Convair, Lockheed, etc.) might be well received. The contact is

Who knows! ...and a Merry Christmas to all.
