Scale of grass or turf size
Posted by kevin888 on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 12:57 AM

I seen online Silflor buffalo grass in two different sizes mm, but no scale. I am currently working on1/48 GWH p-61 on mardsen matting on one side of the base and all sand on other sand would like to add some contrast on the sandy area. I  am trying to recreate a forward airfield in the PTO in about 1944. What would be the correct size ( in mm) to get for a 1/48 scale diorama? or is their a better option.like?????

Oh, it's quite easy - you just have to know how tall the grass would stand (in mm) in reality. then you divide this by 48 and choose the nearest size of the static grass. From my experience it's good to mix different lengths of static grass before applying, too, for a more rough grass, so that it doesn't have this "lawn" look when done. Hope it helps, have a nice day

To go along with Pawel, find out how tall the grasses would be and either chose that size or "mow" the tufts with good scissors to the height you need. I' ve used Silfor for 1/48 to 1/24 (40 to 75 mm) figures.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Just did a quick goggle and apparently it grows upto 130mm. So thats 2.7mm at 48th scale. So i would do a mix of between 1 and 3mm.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

The model railroad people have a felt-like matt in a couple of shades of green that make good grass for 1:48 scale (or deep grass for 1:72).  One color is a uniform green, the other green with some variations in shading, along with a bit of mottled light brown/sand color.  You just glue it to a base. I have used it for the base of several models (all 1:48 or 1:32) and it looks great. A little short for 1:32- it was just mowed, right?

Bottom line--if it looks the right scale or length, it is. If it's not, cut it.
