First "model!"
Posted by Fred H. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 6:17 PM

Created the first plane from scratch. Wood and "elbow" grease. Took for ever to carve slot for the wing. Had something resembling a tail. Used shims to hold wings in place.

Did I say I grew up in Vermont. Stood in line holding $.50 cents for a ride with a "barnstormer!" Son of a gun nosed it into a split rail fence. No one get hurt but sure made ME mad.

Graduated to rubber band models. Kitchen table for a runway. Got up the nerve to take outside. (Well, mother thought it was a good idea!) Dang thing flew, caught a thermal and was out of sight in a flash.

Yellow Cub practicing touch and goes in backyard caught my attention. Grandmother bought me a model. Box was the size of a Diamond Match box. Must have been a "million" pieces. It resembled an airplane when finished.

Have built off and on ever since.

Glad you were not on the 50 cent crash tour! I didn't have that experience, but my dad flew and was one of the first two air traffic controllers in Louisville KY. I used to love going up into the tower, radar room and be occupied for hours. Even after his death, I would still go visit and take my girlfriend (now wife of 38 years today) to visit. Used to have to nav intersections named after my Dad after his passing, that was kind of special. I used to sit and watch Sky King and play with a stick/paper model that my dad built. I'm sure I wasn't too easy on it, and Lordy, I wish I had that now. Lot's of memories.

HI!

I think I've mentioned this before .Sadly my first model was a car .I think it looked ok when I was done .It was supposed to be a CHRYSLER -Town and Country convertible . The thing sure wasn't easy . All that cutting and sanding ! At least it did look like a car !       Tanker-Builder
