I have located the missing horizontal stabilizer and left main tire. It looks to me as if I can simply glue the tire back onto the landing gear. It is broken where it attaches to the axle. Now all I will need to do is obtain the replacement machine guns and I will be good-to-go.

I also located my ME-262 which is missing (broken) all of the landing gear. But I have no idea who produced the kit. I hope some aftermarket replacement parts are available?

Also found is my fairly large Huey gunship, which is in a similar condition. I may be in for something of an adventure with this one though.

I found several un-built kits too, among then is a Testors 1/48 scale C130. I will inventory them and post the results.

Thanks everyone for all your help and encouragement, I will keep you posted

Andy :

Hi ,  and good to hear from you . I had the same problem with two models actually . The old REVELL clear sided Submarine ,You know , the one the Soviets liked so much , and The clear sided MONOGRAM B-17 . I was able to restore the gear on the plane with after market stuff . Being as how various decks and parts were rattling around loose in the sub , I just said " I don't know "  . Well , I was able to do her proud . It just took patience .Have Fun !      Tanker - Builder   P.S.   You can always "restore" A model if you really have good pictures of parts . I,ve had to do it that way , and thank goodness I keep all those old  "mini" albums I have .

I agree with everyone above in that those aftermarket costs can really add up.  I just wanted to show Andy that there are many different avenues available out there to fix his problem.  I can't help but think a quick e-mail to Monogram would have the parts he needs showing up on his doorstep for free a couple of weeks later.

Andy, I've contacted Monogram in the past numerous times for replacement parts and they've always gone above and beyond to get me the parts I needed.  I remember one time I needed some little part from them.  They ended up sending me the entire sprue that the one part came on.  Monogram has an extremely good reputation when it comes to providing you with replacement parts.

Here is a link to their replacement parts request form:

My B-17G has spent the vast majority of its life under glass in my curio type coffee table. I was at one time "back-in-the-day an accomplished modeler. I have several un-built kits which I someday hope to build and a Spitfire Mk5B to finish.

I will try to locate the original type gun barrels and the aftermarket landing gear and tire.

You guys are great!

I am intimidated at the sheer scope of my B52G build, it's a "bigggun"

Here is a wonderful kit for a great price- "Little Miss Mischief" from Revell-Germany, and the price is excellent.  It's an extremely well made model using state of the art tooling.

However, beware it is a "Skill Level 5" which means it's for experienced modelers- Lots of parts, even a full interior.

I was thinking the same thing.   Build a new model.  I do build new models of old ones all the time.  Especially with broken guns, missing stabilizer, which if you don't find, kind of forces you to to get a new kit anyway.  Hey, with new improved skills will make your next one even better.   I built a 17 in the 80's and just built another one 3 years ago, same markings and everything.  It looks a lot better, and I am happier with it.  It might be cheaper also.

Considering Andy appears to be a brand new member, and judging by his post that he may not be that experienced in modeling, I think recommending all these aftermarket parts right off the bat is a mis-step.

Unless the model is an extremely sentimental one that you want to keep, my advice would be to go to Hobby Lobby with a 40% coupon and just buy a new kit. You could probably score it this way for around $15-$20.  Revell is still producing that same model, and you could read up on this forum to improve your skills simultaneously while you build. That way you don't have to worry about replacing broken or missing parts, and you also get a brand new model without the 30 year layer of dust and age on it.

 Just my .02.

Thanks Guy!  I didn't realize that there where white metal landing gear struts out there for the B-17.  That's good to know.

I recomend the quickboost gun barrels.

Resin replacement wheels from true details and you can replace the struts with the white metal landing gear. They are a direct copy of the kit parts, even have the same seam marks. All this can be had on squadron.com

Well, hopefully some kind souls here on the forum might be able to offer some replacement parts for you.  Otherwise, there are a few other avenues one could pursue.  For example, Quick Boost makes a set of resin .50 cal gun barrels that look far better than the original ones that came with the Monogram B-17.

www.quickboost.net/148.htm

As for the broken landing gear and missing stab, Monogram has a really good reputation for replacing broken or missing parts.  If you go on their web site, there's a link you can click on for replacement parts.  I've used it a few times in the past and, a week or two later, the parts show up on my doorstep.  (On a side note, you can also get resin replacement B-17 tires from True Details.  You'd still need to get the struts from Monogram though.)

Hope this helps!

Many years ago I carefully built my B17G 231367 "Chow Hound". I am talking "back-in-the-day". The years have not been kind to it, and would like some help in restoring the many small thing that happen to old models.

All of the machine gun barrels are broken off, except the chin turret.

The left main gear tire and wheel are broken off. Built before the internet if you can believe it!

The right horizontal stabilizer is missing, BUT I may be able to locate it.

What are my best options to correct these problems on my "poor Old B17G"?
