Greg

I surely don't like reading about you young fellas with sciatica. Any of you doing any stretches? They really help. If you do the wrong ones, they make it worse.

I follow some stretching stuff I saw from the internet.  So far, okay, but only incrementally helps.  Ive had sessions with a Chiropractor, too.  Hospital PT helped but I was told theyre more for pain management, and its really a pain to drive to and from the hospital.

Youre right, wrong stretches make the pain infinitely worse.

I remember taking Mechanical Drawing while in Form 2 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia back in '66-'67.  We were taught to wash our hands at the classroom sink before each class session .  No smudges on that paper!!   It was a fun class for me.Big Smile

It's interesting when old memories come back. I remember making coffee before class. It was pretty much the most important thing to me and another young fella in the class.

I'll bet that would have been verbotten big time in Victoria! Chance of coffee spills and all.

Gary and Ernie, never thought about a drafting table! What a great idea! Of course I remember them, my major for all practical purposes was drafting. (Lines and circles, pencils, templates, compasses .......imagine that. A CAD was a man who liked to chase women back in those days).

Well, Gentlemen. Let me say this; I've lost my Aunt, my Cousin, and the family dog, and my Grandma in less than a year. I'm only in my early 40's, but it still sucks. My eyesight gave out last year after having perfect 20/15 vision all my life! I can't see anything closer than about eight inches in front of my face (I'm farsighted), and I now have sciatica (numbness standing, or sitting for prolonged periods), arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and of course the memory lapses in remembering words. I'm only 42, but I feel as if I'm 92!

Im with you.  Im 45 and about 2 years ago noticed that my eyes wont focus on anything closer than about 6 inches anymore. And yes, I have sciatica pain too, alongside a slip disc  that makes it hard for me to stay sitting for a long period of time.

Ah, the sacrifices we make for this hobby.

My work bench is a drafting table from Ikea. I can adjust the height and it's perfect for building models.

That went down as the quote of the day for me before I even realised it was you who posted it, Patrick. Love a laugh before my first cup of coffee is gone.

GAF, I think you picked a fun old thread to revive. On your sitting at the bench problem, I just built a 45" or so so high bench. Just occurred to me that would make a pretty good standing bench to build at? Just a thought for you. And I've seen those standing desks advertised on TV lately, maybe something like that?

Ah, thanks Greg!  I figured no one would complain about an old thread that's topic was getting older!  Big Smile

A drafting table (if you remember what that is) and stool might be better.  Those are hard to come by now.  I don't understand why more modelers don't use one, especially one with the mechanical straight edge.  Too expensive I suppose.

So you are to blame , huh ? Somehow I wound up with a bunch of 1/144 planes and I am actually having fun ! Between you and Bish that mind trick must have great range .LOL.LOL.LOL.  T.B.

MWahahaha! Welcome to the dark side! You know what they say, "Once you've had miniscule you'll never go back." Okay, okay, they all don't say that. But, they should.

Yeah, getting older bites. Physically breaking down is a bummer. But, it's all about the atitude man. I may be more limited than when I was 30 yet, I maintain a positive and vibrant atitude towards life. Yes, I require reading glasses to do much of what I do but, I'm still going strong in 1/72.

Hey Greg. Should I post an image of my Steve Martin Opti-Grab magnifiers that I made?

Laughing.

By all means!

I'm in the same boat as everyone, bifocals and optivisor. And lumens. Lots and lots of lumens.

My Father had a simpler system...bare feet.  Unfortunately he would usually find a dropped tack or other pointed object.

Try wearing freaking tri-focals for everyday use. For modeling I wear my glasses and the opti-visor from Harbor Freight. What a life saver!Geeked

I have the same issue. I have to use readers along with magnifiers. I hate it!

I'm only 42, but I feel as if I'm 92! I drop everything at least two to three times just for good measure. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to do this modeling without a lot of problems. I just need to finish the things that I started years ago, because if my hand strength gets any worse, then I won't be able to hold anything at MY age! Not to mention the ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) which only makes life worse. : ( sad face <----

IKAR :

Hey don't worry , try looking for a part , you just know you put it in a certain place and when you look down , it's still on the bench where you were deciding where to put it .

Carpet Monster Nah , Now Purr Monster yeah ! I have found more lost parts in her tail hair after she walks under my bench and gets the parts stuck in her hair.

This is easier than trying the get on the floor and use the flashlight trick .  T.B.

I'm 68 and i got back into modeling 2 years ago because i can hardly do construction any longer, but i never thought modeling would hurt too.  Too long at the assembly bench and it's difficult to straighten up.  Too long at my standing spray area and my legs hurt.  No wonder it takes me so long to complete a project... but I am getting a lot of naps in  LOL.

Look at the bright side, you can still move fast enough to catch them.

Tongue Tied...I don't have much to look forward to, do I???

Hit 40 last August...the eyes still rock though!

Had an eye exam a couple months ago....took my daughter in for new glasses. As she's reading the eye chart...she called out a "B"...I mumbled to myself.."that's an "R". The eye doc was like "whoa, what?...you can see that"??? Mind you, I'm about 25 feet away from the chart. He was baffled and offered me a free exam, just to see (no pun intended)...still 20/20+...and then some!!!

I'll be payin for it, I'm sure. I'll be stricken blind by 45.

Ah yes, the glasses, hearing aids, arthritis, memory issues, neuropathy and a stroke. Luckily at 75 I can still do some modeling, but the most unpleasant thing is I can remember chasing girls, I just can't recall what I did when I caught them.

Glasses can't help that.

Try this one.  It's either becaue of genitcs or a head injury, and I've had two but I managed to develope a problem where there's water building up in the layers of my cornea.  This throws focus into chaos at times and with the floaters running around from teh dead cells, you sometimes see little things that aren't there.  Since nobody in my family wore glasses, I have to assume it's from the head injuries, one as a kid, and one in the Air Force.

Add to this that my hands are numb it hurts when I hold things for more than a few seconds, and I sometimes drop things through my fingers where the carpet monster is quite happy.  One time I dropped the same piece four times.

So... 3 years later and we're all older.  My legs have begun to hurt if I sit for any length of time, so it's getting harder and harder to put in bench time.  Something I could not have predicted 3 years ago.

Any adjustments anyone else has made?

Today I had to put on my readers AND my optivisor  to see what I was doing.

That is all.

That's the way I work since I returned to the hobby.

The first sign that made me realize I was getting old was a while ago. My youngest brother was the last one still living at home. While visiting my folks, I walked down the hall, and he was combing his hair in  the mirror.  I asked him, "Who are you, the Fonz?"

He said, "Who?"

Other signs:

Somewhere along the way, I stopped taking the steps two at a time.

That colonoscopy looms larger on the horizon.

During my company softball career, no matter how far I hit the ball, it was a double. That's where I stopped running.
