You might try getting some plexiglass at your local hardware store (Home Depot and Lowes both carry it).  It's pretty easy to cut, more durable than glass, and as long as you're careful and don't scratch it, it should look almost as good.  You might even be able to dip it in future Wink

It is a good deal, but they don't ship to Canada.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

Those are great looking display cases, I've been needing to increase my own display space. Have you guys seen this place www.storesupply.com/pc-12824-1268-12w-x-48l-x-316-tempered-glass-shelves-62406.aspx

It's under $10 a shelf for 12"x48".  I calculated the shipping to the East coast, its was $23 for 4 shelves. I've never bought from them before, I had bookmarked them for when I build my display case.

That is a good price for the shelves.  A local glass shop quoted me close to $50 a shelf.  Pretty steep since I want between 8 and 10 of them.  I found them for closer to $10, but then the shipping costs were over $100.  I'm still planning.  Eventually, I would like to designate each shelf for a country.  My focus is 1/48 ww2 fighters, and I have a wall alcove to fill.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

Great score on those shelves tempestjohnny - I wandered into a "soon to be closing" spot last year in hopes of finding something, all they had left was clothing racks though.

Colin I got the glass and brackets from a store going out of business. The big shelves cost me $50 the little one at the back $20. I think I got a steal

Right now my display cabinet is overflowing... So to be honest I'm using the "what fits where" method.  :(

That looks great, Johnny!  How much did the glass cost?  I'm planning something similar with 8-10 shelves, each 10x48.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

Just got my new display shelves set up.  7 shelves are 7 feet by 16 inches. 1 is only 5 and half feet since I cracked itAngry

The small shelves are 2 feet by 10 inches

Now I have to really start building to fill them up.

My display area is only 40 inches wide but it is 7 feet from the corner to the pipe.  Long and narrow

I organise mine by type of aircraft.

It gives me major headaches though, since I only build armour and ships. ;-)

Too many inspections in the Army will cure that. ;-)

Thank you Gary. When I had a separate hobby/display room, it made for a good conversation over a few beers there with guests.

Hot damn stik!  I could spend hours looking at and drooling over your collection.   The armor alone would take a while.   That is really something to see sir!  What a fantastic display of modeling skill.  Bow Down

My ships are by country and era, my planes are all jumbled together, ones I did a better job building typically in front.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Right now (since I don't have a huge bunch) they are in order of build.

On the bench:  Tamyia Mosquito Mk. VI for the '44 group build.  Yes, still.

That's too bad!  Yeah, the models usually do impress visitors, and most have many questions about them.  Please show her these pics, explaining that display cabinets can look nice, and be an asset as far as decor goes.  Good luck!

panzerpilot, you have a hobby room? A whole room for yourself? What is that like?  All I have is what little room that i can muster in the garage, and I have only started building a month ago and know that I will need more room already.

Right now, I have several in the living room on a bookcase. More building up in the hobby room.

I found a couple of pretty cool display shelves at IKEA. There's about 8 shelves on each set. My plan is to paint one set a color close to RLM66 and put the German birds on it. The other, OD, for Allied planes. Probably put them all in my hobby room at that point.

Gary,

She says that it will look junky and not go with stuff we have. But I am with you, it would make the house that much more beautiful and when people come over, it would be a nice topic of conversation.

I have trouble right now just starting out where to display them, since the wife does not want them in the house,

Why is your wife so opposed to displaying your art in the house?  The models make a beautiful display.

Stauffer, why would you "trash" them? Is there not a way that they could be stored some how in boxes so as space comes avalible you could set them out again?

I have trouble right now just starting out where to display them, since the wife does not want them in the house, so I have the garage, but I wanted to hang them in the bed room. My concern is if i hang them "wrong" is there a possibly of bending and cracking in the wrong places.

My oldest won't leave the "nest" for another 5 years, so that room won't be mine until then. So I am still trying to figure out space, but trashing is not an option for me.

If a plane had folded wing features then I try if possible folding them just to get some extra room.

That is something I do nowadays as well. Space is at a premium on my aircraft display shelves.

Great question!

I also group by genre, and then usually nation, and then chassis-style; i.e., variants of Pz IV, or Tiger variants, Sherman, etc. Or if I have more in one category, like say, Flak Tanks, I'll group those together until I get more Pz IV-based Flak Tanks----Wirbelwind, Ostwind, Modelwagen, Kugelblitz, etc.

Ideally I think would be by country, period etc. but at least for me it's where ever it will fit in one of the display cases. If a plane had folded wing features then I try if possible folding them just to get some extra room.
