Internet Hobbies in trouble
Posted by BlackSheepTwoOneFour on Sunday, March 2, 2014 3:53 PM

Did anyone get this in an email? For those who don't, this is the email I got:

This is an email that I hoped and prayed that I would never have to send.
For the longest time, especially after we re-introduced the weekend sales a few months ago, we have been struggling to stay in business. We thought that by offering our customers an unbelievable deal on the weekends, they would really step up to the plate and purchase huge dollar amounts. After all, if you're getting a deal where your price is very close or at wholesale we would have hoped you would have taken this opportunity to purchase more of what you really wanted. The whole idea was to generate cash flow that would help us survive the downturn in business created by these sales during the week until the next sale. Unfortunately, the weekend sales never generated the cash flow that we counted on.
The hard truth is that selling anything and making little or no profit is a formula for disaster. Each business must generate enough operating profit to be able to pay for their cost of overhead. We recently tried to stem the hemorrhaging by introducing our Internet Hobbies Savings Club but it now appears, by the dramatic drop in business, that our customers are not interested in participating in the program as much as we had hoped.
This has brought us to a point that unless we are able to regain our customer's loyalty, we will perish as a company. My wife and I have invested thousands of dollars from our savings and whatever else we could afford to keep our business afloat but the well is now running dry. Many of you may think that Internet Hobbies is a large organization. We are a small business that has served the hobbyist for going on 18 years. The truth is, there are only four people still working here part time. We have had to lay off most of our full time employees because of diminished sales. I would love to be able to re-hire these talented people but unless sales increase they will remain unemployed.
Our plight probably means little or nothing to some of you but I still believe we have many friends that care about Internet Hobbies. I want to thank those customers that have supported us with your continued loyalty and we would appreciate anything you could do to help. We really could use a big bump in our sales this weekend.

Sincerely,
Dale Bruner, Managing Partner Internet Hobbies, LLC 800-873-9893 www.internethobbies.com

It's a tough business; we want the lowest prices and the fastest delivery. I feel for any small business in these tight times.

I tried to buy from them while I was on deployment overseas and attempted to contact them regarding their sites conflict with an APO address. They did not seem to interested in my business then. I am still on their email list, but have not bought anything from them since then. I do not like seeing any hobby shop or site close down. But this one does not have me feeling as bad as it would if it was another such business.

The future doesnt bode well for them.  While there are asian wholesalers who rely on large turnover for small profit on each item, I think domestic businesses will struggle.  Some of these asian suppliers are even offering free shipping.  Plus its not exactly a growth industry either.

Though I have never done business with them, looking at their About Us page has me assuming that their business model is one of an order broker just a bit more polished than say that of others many are familiar with. They posted pictures of warehouses across the country which are not theirs but the very same distributor's facilities that other hobby retailers use to supply their product needs. "Just In Time" in the supply sense is buzz for you don't keep inventory you order it when you need it.

Many in the hobby retail industry are feeling economic stress. Even some of those who have been around for decades are losing market share both on the wholesale and retail side. One which I am quite familiar with has seen continued steady growth and attracted more mfrs to be their distribution partner jumping to be the largest hobby retailer in the western hemisphere.

Currently we are traveling representing hobby mfrs, calling on LHS and attending local events to promote the hobby as well as those mfrs products we provide demos and staff training. Plus we also provide business and marketing consulting.

We see three types of owners...those that can't wait to close their doors, those that just exist and do little, nothing or the wrong things to help support themselves in their local markets and lastly those who are excited and successful. Its been eye opening and surprising at what you'll find.

As the number of LHS shrinks, the distance between them increases. In an article I wrote for FSM sister publication Model Retailer a while back the estimated number of LHS was +/-1500. That number has seen a decline from the latest numbers provided to us recently. This requires us to travel longer distances between calls...but its something that those we represent feel is necessary.

I've worked just about every aspect of this industry...clerk, manager, mfr, mfrs rep, author, consultant, retailer. Its been an interesting experience I'll say that!

There have been several players in this industry that came and departed. Some folks said that if X leaves the hobby will not be the same. Well once X left, some felt a little sorrow, but the world continued to spin and models found their way into those folk's stashes just the same only from someone else who knew what they were doing to remain viable as a business in this arena.

Well, I guess I will find out how serious they are about the line "We really could use a big bump in our sales this weekend."

I placed an order Saturday night after getting home from dinner. I ordered some items that are on a clearance sale. (I was saddened, then a little nervous reading this post the next night)  It is now Monday, almost the close of business in the East. It seems that I should be getting the email that says they have shipped the order sometime today. Granted it was "only" $60 counting shipping charges.

I hope I am coming back to this thread to brag on them for their prompt shipping on sale items shipped from stock. (the items couldn't be "backordered" if someone tried to, lol)

I just ordered the 1/72 Italeri Short Sunderland. About 22 bucks cheaper than I can find it anywhere else.
