My small, cramped, messy model-building space
Posted by Ozmac on Monday, December 15, 2014 4:41 PM

I actually like my model-building space, but a few friends have commented that they can't believe I build models in it, so here it is. Does anyone have a set-up worse than mine? Stick out tongue

The pic is a bit distorted because I took it on "Pano" wide-angle setting on my iPhone, to fit it all in. The shed itself is 1.75m x 2.75m, or 5'8" x 9'.

The space is also my garden shed. I am a very keen gardener as well, and my wife and I both work from home in our very small inner-city house in Sydney. She's an artist and so needs her own (small) art studio, so this garden shed is the only space I have (my home office study if filled with books, computers and about 400 diecast cars in cabinets, with no space left for model building).

My garden shed work seat is the white stool on the left (built by my Grandpa, a carpenter, about 80 years ago, it's still as solid as rock). My cardboard spray booth sits on top of various bags of potting mix, etc. If I need more storage space, I bang another nail into the framework and hang it up there.

I like it here, it's quiet, I can hear the birds in my garden while I work, and it's my own private space where time seems to simultaneously stand still while zooming by.

Here's mine. Quite a bit more room being a 4 car garage. However it is seasonal and I'm using a small table in the living room right now.

I have a feeling that my wife is going to boot me out of my current modeling space this summer as soon as it starts to warm up.  I'm constantly hearing about the "bad smells" coming from the bonus room.  I've started using my paint booth when doing any kind of gluing so that she cant smell it.  I'll take some pictures and add them tonight when I get home.

Until I get the interior of the mobile home cleared out from the late wife's hoarding issues, my space is a TV tray.  Will set something else up in the old computer space when that gets done.

I know I know, I thought I was spoiled too when she told me to model up there. But then I quickly realized that after the kitchen table incident it was kind of like being grounded! LOL

Steve,

At this point in time, the resolution has been some fancy placemats (as pictured in my build for the Weekend Madness GB with the Hellcat).  I have been advised by my wife that as soon as the weather warms and I can move the table into the garage.  I WILL be conducting some table refinishing...no questions asked!  LOL  I really cant argue with her on this one.  I did cause the problem and the table is less than 6 months old.  Definitely not one of my brightest moments in my model making career.

Not too cramped, but I am being closed in on the sides with various cabinets, etc.

Well at least she's still allowing you to build in the house.

Here is my workspace that I have been sent to.  Embarrassed  I definitely need better lighting in the area for sure.

Yes I used to and unfortunately don't have any pictures. It was the second floor hallway closet when we lived in SC. The closet was about 4 ft wide by 8 ft long. I actually liked being in my little space but the wife suggested in converting the guest bedroom across the hall into my man cave. I naturally did not disagree with her.   Geeked
