Dirk Pitt's 2014 Build Review
Posted by dirkpitt77 on Saturday, January 3, 2015 4:07 PM

I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring with all the build reviews going on. Some great stuff in there. I did a lot of traveling this year as well as fought a lot of adversity, so not as productive as some, but still some cool stuff checked off in the 'Done' category. Here goes:

Revell's 1/48 F/A-18E Super Hornet, a memorial build to a friend:

Tamiya's old 1/48 A-10A. I hadn't gotten the ladder access door glued on yet in this pic, but it's there now:

Italeri's 1/35 Chaffee, bashed into a graffito'd playground display:

And I think this is the Dragon BRDM-3 in 1/35:

Oh, I did finish up this Revell P-47N on New Year's Eve, also. Messed up the finish pretty bad on this one, which is why it isn't weathered. Markings are for Hawaii National Guard, postwar:

Enjoy and thanks for looking,

Chris, I can't tell from the pictures that there is anything wrong with the Thunderbolt. It looks mighty fine, as do the rest of your builds. Well done!!

Thank you. For the NMF I had decanted some Krylon Silver Foil Metallic paint into a jar for airbrushing. When it went on, I think there was a static charge that attracted dust or something. It made the wing surfaces really gritty, which caused a panel line wash to sort of 'spread' by capillary action.  I couldn't get the wash to clean up with a swab. Luckily I had experimented first on the bottom of one wing, so I just left the rest. Not bad for the 3 foot rule, I guess, eh?  ;)

You know, I've had that happen with past paint jobs, almost always with a flat gray paint. I would airbrush it on, and it would look like sandpaper almost immediately. I never could figure out what was causing it to happen. I would strip the paint, make sure everything was good (paint mix, airbrush settings, masking, etc.), and respray. The second time, all was well, even though I didn't change a thing. This happened on probably four different builds, and never back-to-back builds. Usually a year or two apart.

A really nice looking collection.

Well done on the A-10, that is, to date, the only kit i've not finished once started. I had so many fit issues with the main landing gear pods - it really demoralised me.

Great to see you wrestled it into submission!

I like your collection, especially the  F18. I really like the bases. Nice work all around.
