I google the heck out of the subject until I figure out the true store and disregard the things that are not consistent with the majority of the explanation or history in the websites or books (in some cases).  

I guess I dont have a "go-to" though.

In addition to primeportal, militaryfactory.com is a good resource. There are a whole bunch of sites dedicated to particular interests, I'm always amazed at how much is available. As Don indicated, a google search can turn up a lot of info, especially if you're looking for specific information. One example would be warbirdsresourcetgroup.org, a site devoted to Luftwaffe aircraft.

Assembling them all into a reference index would be daunting but valuable if someone felt they had the time!

I usually go through all of my modeling magazines & go to each web site listed in them, regardless of whether they're for a kit manufacturer, or another magazine, etc. I go through them all, 'cause ya never know whatcher gonna find. I then save each one as a bookmark on my browser, under the heading of "Hobby Stuff". I also do the same with links that I come across here, and on other websites. Doesn't take long at all to build up a huge collection of links.
