I have been away from modeling for many years.  Is there a source, in print or otherwise, of the very basics of getting started?

You're in the right place, JJSscwartz! Kamlbach Publishing, the company behind FSM magazine and this forum, has a large catalog of books to cover the information you need. Check the FSM site for PDF articles, guides, tutorials, and the link to their shop.

Take a moment to look at the list of forums.  There are so many forums in the FSM forum hierarchy.  Pay particular attention to the bottom-most category- Tools, Techniques and References- an area that is not used as much as it should be.  There are many good threads in those forums that should be of interest to you.

FSM here does an email in about 3-4 parts on basics.  I think it is on the front page, no charge for it

I found this site very helpful when getting into it. It's detailed, it's in depth. And most of all, it's free! As always, take what info you want and modify techniques as you go until you find your own niches. Links are at the bottom. Hope it helps.

Besides all the great info you just received above, "u-tube" has more than enough films to keep you bleary-eyed for the next couple of years.
