I use my airbrush. I take the paint jar off (which is stored with thinner), run the brush to make sure the thinner inside is all used up, and then use it to dust model.

No , No , No!

Do Not use any kind of toothbrush on a model EVER ! Go buy your missus ( if you have one  ) a brand new Blush brush . Then take the models and submerge them in a warm bath of water with a few drops of Dawn in it .

Then , one at a time Pick , one up and Gently swirl the tips of the brush hairs on the model . As you do this you will get off , not only the dust , but inevitable grease and oils deposited where they were living and staying . This is important , because if you don't you will get fish-eyes even if you brush paint them .      T.B.

Thanks Jay Jay and Cadet Chuck for your suggestions - I'll try both methods.  I was just a little nervous about getting the kits wet, but it sounds like it shouldn't be a problem.  Thanks again!

I've had good results simply holding them under gently running water in the shower. Then just set them on a towel and let them air dry.  It works with balsa/tissue models, too.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

I would first try a dot of dish soap in a cup of water. Gently scrub with an old soft toothbrush then rinse with water.  Any way you do it is tough around the tracks and road wheels.

I'm finally retired. Now time I got, money I don't.

Question about cleaning old models
Posted by qcarr on Friday, April 17, 2015 2:32 PM

Hi,

I'm hoping this is the correct section to post a question about cleaning old models. I recently bought some semi-completed tank kits (built, base coat of paint) on Ebay and, while they're in pretty good shape, they're so dusty that I sneeze every time I get near them!

I've sprayed them several times with compressed air, but that's just not doing the job. What's the best way to clean filthy kits that haven't been varnished?

Thanks!
