Model of the month club.
Posted by Souda99 on Sunday, April 26, 2015 6:10 PM

Ok so my fiance called me while she was on her break at the toy store she works at and asked me about a model of the month club. She asked this because she has been seeing clubs like this for the lack of better terms "Geeks", such as Loot Crate, NerdBlock and Geek Box. I remember when I was a kid in the 80' (mind you I'm 39 now) my mom got me a membership in one of the model of the month clubs and it gave the option of auto, armor, airplanes and such. Has anyone seen any of these subscription based kits around anymore? I know Mega Hobby has there version for a 6 month subscription at a rather hefty price, and then there is the Model Works ones. Would anyone subscribe to one if there was one still around?

I have looked around for some. Mega Hobby is way too pricey and could not find any others. When I was a kid in the late 1960's and the early 1970's, Aurora had a model of the month club. They had some cool models. I remember Revell use to have one as well until around the late 1970's.

Yes I would join one if they had one at a decent price.

Wolfman

What would you consider a decent price? I know the subscription boxes that my fiance is talking about and they come loaded with about 6 to 10 items. I know personally I would love a model subscription box that had a kit and maybe a few tools or some accessory sets. Even if the accessories weren't pertinent to the kit I received, I would still love it because it might be one that I have been looking for or one that might give me an idea for a future build.

Somewhere between $10 and $20 a month to start. Maybe we should send an email to revell. They could do something like $10 for skill level 1 kits, $15 for skill level 2 kits, $20 for Skill level 3, and $25 for master modeler level kits. They could have it where when you build the kit, you can post it on their website where others can vote. Winners get credits to buy things on their website or XX credits to get gifts like tools or accessories. They could offer pre-release kit specials or even have some folks build a prototype kit and review it for them. Just some quick ideas.

All the current model of the month clubs are sponsored by hobby shops.

Back in the 60's ther types of clubs were the manufactures themselves. I never joined because I didn't have the money. Things haven't changed much :)

I wouldn't be interested simply because, at this point, my modeling stash is so large and my specific interests so necessarily narrowed by the time that it now takes to complete a model in the respective detail and finish which I now demand of myself that I wouldn't be interested in having disparate models arriving that I would only have to sell on eBay because of lack of storage space.

However, when I was more of a novice modeler, I did indeed build all kinds of different genres and odd subjects just out of curiosity. I could see myself joining one back then, if it.were available.
