The USS Requin sub. Almost all my builds are aircraft, but I'd like to build the Requin because she's docked in my hometown.

So, I was thinking, what if a manufacturer made a couple "base hull" kits that contained optional parts for bows and sterns, etc plus the ability to trim the mid piece to different lengths, so that you could kind of kitbash up your own "what ifs", "never weres", or even build something perhaps not "exactly correct but relatively close to a ship that a specific kit doesn't yet exist for.

You may be on to something there.

I would "DEFENETLY" buy 2 or 3 of those !

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Hi,

In addition to the above I've also had a though about something that might be a bit non-traditional but might also be interesting, though I'm not sure that it would bet fully practical.  In general it would be a "kitbashers" kit for ships.

Specifically, I know that Skywave - I think - markets small boxes with sprues containing Modern US, Modern Russian, and WWII era US and Japanese weapins, sensors and helos/aircraft or ship's boats.

And, over the years I've seen a couple articles on how you can convert some old Airfix ships into similar but different vessels (like using a HMS AJAX kit as the basis for an ARETHUSA class ship or converting the HMS BELFAST to a City, Colony or Swiftsure class ship.

In addition, I've also seen where Revell of Germany had manufactured their models of the SMS DRESDEN and EMDEN with alternate parts so that the same basic hull could be used for either the twin screw DRESDEN or the quad screw EMDEN.  And finally I also have a small 1/700 model of LCS-1 (from Cyberhobby - I think) where you can see that the manufacturer built the molds to allow for fitting a different stern piece to reflect changes to the later LCS-3 and LCS-5 variants.

In general you could maybe have one kit reflecting US WWII type destroyers, another representing US WWII cruisers, and others representing similar stuff for either the IJN, RN or Germany etc. as well as similar kits for more modern vessels all to a scale where you could add the weapons and sensors and stuff from the Skywave boxes.

In some ways an RN Light Cruiser base model kit might be similar to an Airfix kit of the 555ft long HMS AJAX kit, without its weapons and sensors with the deck and hull either broken into pieces, or at leaset "scored" to show where to cut, to lengthen, shorten and or otherwise make changes to the hull to reflect a 506ft long HMS ARETHUSA class hull, a 485ft HMS DIDO, or a larger City class etc.

I guess in some ways they could be viewed as a "starter kit" for people who might want to try and scratchbuild something, but may want help with the hullform, etc.

Smile

Hi,

I'm not sure that I haven't already posted something along these lines before but, here are a couple possible areas that I was thinking of maybe;

a) one of the newer USCG cutters

b) a modern research ship like one of the new NOAAs ships or those operated by some University's/research organizations

c) one of the large Alaska State Ferries (or some similar vessel)

d) a typical Offshore Supply Vessel

e) a modern minesweeper/hunter

f) some representative cargo ships or tankers like you might see in a modern day typical port city

g) some more famous pre-dreadnought and/or ironclad era ships like maybe the USS Maine, HMS Warrior, and HMS Inflexible, or the like

I'd like to see some smaller jets kitted in 1/24 scale. For years, the only jet in 1/24 has been the Airfix Harrier ? Small dimension jets like Skyhawks and Mirage, Bae Hawk, , F-104, could also be done in 1/24. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting larger parts as the eyesight fails !

Another 1/48 BF-109G-6 or P-51D Mustang. Oh God NO! Just kidding, seems there's 5 or more of them released every year.

I'd like to see in 1/32, the EA-6A and EA-6B along with an F-4B Phantom II.

Now an ME-163 Komet in say 1/16th scale wouldn't take up too much shelf space. And think of the possibilities if Dragon or someone were to come out with a crew/maintence men figure sets to go with it.

For the naval side of the house, going up a notch or two in 1/200 or 1/144th scale, modern day U.S. British and Russian submarines. Jeeze...what would a Los Angles class or a Typhoon measure out in 1/72nd?

I'd love to see a decent mfg.like Tamiya or Airfix do a better 1/48 B-26, my favorite aircraft. The only one I know of in 1/48 is the old and tired Revellogram. Also back in the day Aurora ( I think ) made 1/16 scale figures of all the US armed froces. I'd sure like another crack at building and painting those since I know how now.

I’d love to see some of the lesser seen USAF & USN aircraft of the post WWII/Early Cold War era in 1/48.

The F-86H, RF-84F, the F-82 family, F11F, F3D, B-66.  And some more economically priced kits (compared to Kitty Hawk & Trumpeter) of the F-5A/C & T-38, Vigilante, Skywarrior, Cougar, Fury, Banshee, and Voodoo families. Revell? Airfix?

An Escort carrier ( preferebly the Bouge ) in 1/144 scale. I realize thats kinda asking a lot so I will settle for 1/350 .... If I have too.

Any Unlimited Hydroplane from the 70's,  Preferebly in 1/25 scale. Miss Budweiser, or the O Boy O Berto. These were the boats powered by Allison and Rolls Royce aircraft engines.

I also "WISH" someone would make this in 1/48 scale....

I've probably said it before here, maybe, but I'll say it again: My dad was a flight instructor at Enid Army Air Field for a year and a half before being sent to B-29 transition training in January 1945. Therefore, I'd like to see an injection molded BT-13/15 Valiant in 1/48 scale, the airplane he instructed in. And since I am in trainer-mode, I'd like to see (in 1/48 scale), a PT-19 and a Kinner powered PT-22. Three significant trainers that have sadly been overlooked by kit manufacturers. All of those P-51 and P-47 aces had to start somewhere.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

I just got interested in fishing boats while watching GM do justice on a fireboat hull to turn it into a "Fishing Boat".  A kit like that would leave a lot of room for personal expression.

There are plenty of 1/700 Ca's but the Brookln class Cl's are only available in resin. I would like to see a Philadelphia or Boise as well as the Helena and St Louis variation.

Also would like to 2nd the nomination for the old SR-71 1/48 kit.  I too had one but gave it away.

How 'bout more Pirate ship kits?  (Just Kidding.)  I believe Revell released a 1/150 Black Pearl in September.  Was this on someones list?

The good old North Sea Trawler is enough for me.

But it's true, commercial ships don't get enough attention.

Military: An ODS ro-ro would be great.

I just watched "the Perfect Storm " for the 12th time (I own the DVD) and I sure would like to see models of the Andrea Gail and the Hanna Bowden long line fishing craft to build.

Fishing boats don't do much for me... except maybe the Russian Trawler in "The Final Countdown"... "Forrest Gump's" shrimping boat (Jenny) would  be a fun one to build...

But what really impressed me in "The Perfect Storm" was the PJs and their HH-60... gotta build me one of those one day.

Well it is time for a 1/48 SR-71/A-12 accurate Blackbird. My Monogram SR has had a rough life and I didn't do it justice at the time. Not only that, I need it with gear down for my museum. What an important historic aircraft of the time.  Just wishin'.

Haven't read through all of this thread, so I may be repeating...

Seems like every German truck and a lot of Russian trucks from WW2 are modeled. But we don't have enough good models of all of the Allies varient models. For crying out loud, I can't believe that an Allied Ambulance hasn't been in production for YEARS. Mirror models seems to be trying to fill the gap, but I'd like to see others get in to the WW2 truck market.

The CCKW had a ton of varients based on a large Van body. I believe there are some resin conversions out there, but I'd think there'd be one all plastic kit that could cover a ton of varients: surgery van, engineers van, mechanics van, etc.

What would I like? More 1/35 injection plastic NATO/Western mid Cold War era AFVs. The tanks are mostly covered, but APCs, SP guns, armored & scout cars, etc. are either non existent or done in very old kits in 1/35 injection plastic. Trumpeter has gone all out on Soviet stuff from that era. But their adversaries still have large gaps in the  collection.
