Model Master discontinuing RLM colors?
Posted by Mopar Madness on Thursday, July 2, 2015 8:10 PM

Howdy,

I stopped by my local HobbyTown today to see if there was anything I just couldn’t live without.  I always seem to find something!  Anyway, the Model Master paint racks seemed to be lacking in RLM colors.  I asked my buddy behind the counter who always has a kind word and great modeling tips.  He informed me when they tried to make an order a couple weeks ago, the distributor informed them Model Master is discontinuing their acrylic RLM colors.  In an effort to find more info, I made a cursory review of some web resources to no avail.  Has anyone else heard something recently about a discontinuation?

They still show the full range of RLM colors on the recently revamped Testors website. At least in the MM Enamel line. There are a few less colors such as 80/81/82/83 in the Acrylic range. This is after the latest shake up and culling of the paint lines that was done a few months back.

Well, I sure hope not because I have finally become comfortable with these.  They can be a bit high maintenance but have a nice satin finish.

Buying paint at the hobby store has become so hit and miss. Mine, the last one standing, never had any maritime colors at all. Their whole focus with kits are model airplanes. And I know I am looking at jars that I've looked at for the last ten years.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

That's an interesting perspective I've never considered.  The non-aircraft non-armor modeler looking for unique items of their interest.  I bet it can be difficult finding genre specific supplies sometimes like maritime colors.  Actually, now that I think about it, there used to be a great small hobby shop north of Dallas that had a rich bounty of planes, trains, and tanks but I never saw ships, space vehicles, model guns, etc...

My guy at the hobby shop said if I wanted a good equivalent to the MM paints that I should try Vallejo Model Air paints.  Unfortunately, they don't sell them at this time.

Consider yourself lucky. The HobbyTown here in my neck of the woods never carried the RLM colors in acrylic. I didn't even know that was an option!

Man that seriously stinks! I would have assumed those would have been standard inventory at each franchise.

The Hobby Town here in Las Vegas has a hit and miss selection of MM, Humbrol and Tamiya paints. My fiance builds Gundams and they only carry 3 colors of the Gundam markers. I have just taken to buying them from Scale Hobbyist and sites like them.

Have you used the Revell paint? If so, how does it compare to MM or Tamiya? I like the MM finish and durability because I've never had any paint lifted while masking. I'm not a fan of the Tamiya finish but it's easily airbrushed without an accompaniment of other chemicals. I've thought about the Italeri paint but read too many bad reviews.

Revell enamels are great. I have a few of their colors and I am very pleased with them. But I have never come across or had a chance to use their acrylics.

MM or Tamiya have never been the best.Humbrol eats them for lunch.Revell eats them for dinner, and Vallejo eats them for breakfast.Luftwaffe colored are just an assumption on what the actual colors were.Remember ww2, color photos are very rare and the rest are computer generated guesses.Thats on the both enamel or water side of the equation in chemistry .

If your paint lifts while masking, then your tape is strong or you pulled to fast.Pull at an angle real slow.

Acrylics from Revell are very good and strong. They are also good paints for figures. They are thick and can be thinned out for airbrushing. It looks like acrylics will take over the modeling world.Cancer causing enamels.

Amazon has a lot of Revell paint. It seems to come in sets...

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help. Do y'all happen to have any personal experience with Vallejo Model Air acrylics? Good, bad, or indifferent?

I did notice that you can't order Testors paint directly from them anymore, but they're still making the RLMs

Vallejo? I have limited experience. It does seem to go on a bit thicker than other acrylics I've used. They have a really good color selection. I thin it with water or vallejo thinner medium.

Vallejo paints if possible thin very lightly and use a top cup mounted airbrush double action .
