Getting Inside Your Subject
Posted by Mark Lookabaugh on Saturday, July 11, 2015 10:00 AM

Saw a movie last night that prominently featured my latest build (Battlestar Galactica).  I found myself watching it in a completely different way.  Every time it would come on screen, I sort of shifted into "analysis" mode and looking at every detail more than I would have otherwise.  It was kind of cool to have a more intimate connection with something after modeling it.  Was just curious if anyone else has had that feeling, and what models/movies you might have experienced that with.   -Mark

Oh yea !  Mark,

Movies are a great and constant inspiration to my modeling hobby.  Sometimes I just hafta go out and buy the movie just so I can pause it to get a bettter view of the aircraft I want to build ie.

"The Aviator  "  ;Spruce Goose and the Hugh's Racer are just two of the subjects I've built.

" The Memphis Belle " ;   I have 1 in the stash

" They Where Expendable " ;   an old John Wayne flick about the PT boats in the Phillipenes

" Tora,Tora, Tora ;  a ton of WWII aircraft in this one

Of course I do some research on the specific aircraft I want to build, because the movies are inherantly loaded with "artisitic license " and the planes are sometimes way off on the actual thing, but in your case as in the Sci-Fi stuff, they're obviously right on.

I'm like JJ. Recently I bought "G.I. Blues" just to watch the first ten minutes or so of the footage of old M48 gas burners. Movie was decent too.

Ans as was said, you've got something in common with the folks that created the show, sort of like a "Group Build".

Another of many reasons that I dislike everything going to computer graphics now.

Recently there was a thread around here about Lockheed Lodestars, which led to a very wonky analysis of the last scene in Casablanca. Where it was filmed, how the aircraft was remarked as Air France. Lots of fun.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

You Know What " G " ;

I find myself doing that on the ships I build especially the scratch-built ones .And also  especially with my varied military career .

I like to watch the Wings series from the History channel on the specific plane that I'm building. It's inspiring to see something in action.

Hello!

Yeah, the feeling is good. In my case I read a book about a Vietnam vet who was a track commander on a M42 Duster. Then AFV Club issued a kit of the M42 with decals showing the exact vehicle I was reading about - I contacted the vet from the book via e-mail and consulted him on many details - that was good model building.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day

Paweł

Yep,

I recently went to a few museums and found myself looking with a whole different eye than just a casual observer.

San Francisco Maritime Museum, SS Jeremiah O'Brien, USS Pampanito and USS Hornet link.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

I do it too. I have a Klingon Cruiser under construction right now, and when I was watching Star Trek The Motion Picture on my days off recently, I payed particularly close attention to their details in the opening sequence.

I get most of my inspirations reading Fly Past magazines. Movies and television shows? Not so much.

The Hunters with Robert Mitchum has some detailed F-86 shots. The Bridges at Toko Ri has tons of good views of Panthers. I have the Monogram offering with the movie markings and will be using the movie as reference.

JJ

A little bit of trivia about "They Where Expendable",  was filmed in South Florida off Key Biscayne and the Florida Keys. Really great action packed movie with The Duke.

"PT 109" with Cliff Robertson has some detailed color footage of the Elcos.
