So I recently received my latest order from ScaleHobbyist.
One of the things included in the shipment was Dragon's 88mm Flak 36 w/Crew (no. 6260). It's really an awesome kit, the molding is crisp, and it's from Dragon's glory days (around 2005 by my estimate). But the prime attraction for me, and the main reason I bought it, was the goodie box. The goodie box includes turned metal for both the Flak 18 and Flak 36 barrels, as well as brass ammo and a lot of other nice brass parts.
So imagine my suprise when, as I was rifling through the contents of the kit, I discovered that the goodie box was nowhere to be found. After some checking against the kit instructions and Adam Mann's online review, I came to the conclusion that Dragon has done something for which it is infamous.
Dragon has a habit of taking great old kits that contain goodies such as Magic Tracks and metal barrels, and issuing "reruns". These reruns will have the same styrene, but will have all the special metal parts removed, and the Magic Tracks replaced by DS. They issue these reruns using the same stock number, so there's almost no way to tell if you have a rerun until you open the box. And at least in the case of DML 6260, they hitched up the price by $10.
They did this same thing with DML 6253, the former "holy grail" of Pzkpfw. VI kits. They got rid of the brass fenders, turned metal barrel, and the other stuff contained in the goodie box. They also "upgraded" the tracks from Magic Tracks to DS. I was really excited when I saw 6253 at my LHS, but I am now almost certain that this was one of the reruns. I'm glad I didn't take the bait.
Lucky for me, ScaleHobbyist is run by great people who not only replyed to my email within the hour, but then refunded me the money for the MIA goodies. They offered a return and full refund, but I'm still happy with the kit's plastic. I am considering whether I should contact Dragon to complain.
