USS Paricutin
Posted by dmichael on Thursday, May 19, 2016 10:04 AM

Hey all! Does anyone happen to know if there is a model kit company that produces an ammunition ship? My brother served on the USS Paricutin during the Vietnam war and I would love to have that ship (or any ammunition ship, I can always change the numbers) in my collection. I've looked through the internet and can only find cruisers, destroyers and battleships of all kinds, but no ammunition ships. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

There is only one type that exists and it's the IJN Special Ammunition Ship Kashino.

Here she is. Not too differfent looking than a APA like the old Revell USS Montrose kit

With some conversion work I think that it could be done.

Paricutin (nice name by the way and I did not know anything about ammunition ships until you posted and I looked it up).

Ammunition ships seem to be named for volcanoes....ironic?

She was a Mount Hood ship, class C2-S-AJ1. There are no plastic C2 ships. Certainly some in 1/700 resin, I would think.

Looks like a chore, but worth it

There's a Revell model called the Hawaiian Pilot, which is a C3 ship. But it's not the same at all.

The Revell Montrose is a class VC2-S-AP5 based on a Victory Ship hull.

There were a couple of Renwal APA/ AKA kits, Sarasota was a VC and full hull, but not what you want. Seminole is a AKA class C2-S-AJ3 which is closer. Both of these are good models, but expensive and hard to find.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Go to ebay and type in Renwal attack cargo ship, or try this link,

There's an attack cargo ship in the collection, but I don't think you'll like the price!
