Reviewing older kits
Posted by Panzerwerk on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 9:08 PM

We get so ecited about all the new stuff , I have gone online looking for reviews of older kits from the 60's-90's and found some areas severly lacking , so I started a youtube channel for older kits , nothing fancy , just some inbox reviews and maybe some builds in the future .

Not all of us have $50-$100 to drop on one kit and some of these older kits are quite nice ! and build into respectible pieces ,and many of these older kits can be picked up pretty cheap ! like I said nothing fancy.

yup , but even scalemates does not have reviews or links to everything , also some folks like the video format , its just another tool , not even a fancy one so I dont think scalemates has anything to worry about.

That would be great to find reviews of the older models. I can tell you from experience, most Monogram and curent Revell and Revell of Germany releases are VERY attractively priced and some are Monogram re issues like the 1/48 F-4C and the B-17 and 24. The Century Series of 1/48 fighters have very good molded details specially in the pits. The 1/48 Revell F-84G is a gorgeous kit with recessed panel lines and fantastic molded details. The same goes for the 1/48 Revell F-86D. Even at 1/72, the old Monogram/Revell F105s have great details and are very affordable.

Couldn't agree more with what everyone here has said.  I can't afford the expensive kits that are coming out these days.  I cut my teeth in this hobby thanks to the affordable kits of Monogram and Revell and I still purchase them to this day.  Granted, I have not built all of their kits.  I still have yet to build their F-100 which I've heard is a true gem.  There are several other kits of theirs which I haven't built so to see a review of the older kits would be VERY welcome on my part.  Thank you for the YouTube link!!!

Thanks guys , i will work on 1/48 more , but most of my collection is 1/72 and 1/35 , and I have access to a large 1/32 aircraft collection as well , I just did this out of frustration myself , seeing older kits wondering if they were workable .

Thanks again , I will try to do 1 or more a week . and I will try to be more comprehensive with the pics now that i see some folks are interested !

And just a heads up , all pics are High Res , set your player at the HD setting for best pics .

I have all the Monogram century series jets and can tell you that the Hun is a beautiful kit. The molding detail is fantastic but it has a couple of areas that need attention when assembling.

I can't wait to build it again.

Jets usually aren't my thing since I'm more of a U.S. WW2 prop guy, but I'm starting to feel the pull of the jets now.  I love those jets from the '50s and '60s.  I can't believe I've never built the -100 in my 38 years of modeling.  My plan was to stop off at the hobby shop today after work....might have to snag me a Monogram F-100!

Too often people equate an "old" kit with being a "bad" kit.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Beautiful F-100 !!

Thanks so much!  That model represents the F-100 flown by Major Don Schmenk, in service in Vietnam.  He gave me the kit almost 30 years ago.   Sure enough, there's his name under cockpit!Big Smile

Gary

I thought his name on the placard might be visible here.  Maybe zoomed enough...Smile

I love it when you show off your Hun Tex Yes. That is such a beutiful build. Bow Down

Heres the same kit in NMF.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Thank you sir!  I really appreciate the kind words.

But, your NMF bird?  WOW!  What a beauty, and out of the ol' Monogram too!  Could you please post more pics of her? Beer

I read somewhere that the old Monogram Hun kicks the pants out of the newer Trumpy issue, raised lines and all.

Great looking one Steve.  Beer

I would love to, if it's OK with Panzerwerk. I don't want to hijack his thread.

I found the Trumpeter 1/72 F-100 to be a fine kit, looked about right.
