Opinions. Using IS flag in a vignette.
Posted by Griffin25 on Thursday, August 25, 2016 10:35 AM

I need some opinions. I am working on a vignette of a modern Bedouin warrior in the Sinai. He's going to be sitting on a camel under a palm tree, holding a HK G3 assault rifle. The heading is going to say something like = News Report "Bedouin of the Sinai join the fight against extremism". It was a real story from 2015 where the prosperous tourism industry basically stopped because of IS incursions and acts of terrorism in the Sinai. This severley affected the Bedouin economy and they fought back.

I want to put an IS style flag laying on the ground with an AK and some shell casings with the Bedouin standing above it. I'm not sure if I should esspecially if I post it on any modeling sites. I really want to but is it a good idea?? Any opinions? It makes me a little mad just thinking that I have reservations. A little bit of my freedom has been taken away, subconciously. Any opinions are welcome. Thank You.

I don't see why not. Its no differant from useing a Nazi flag, Communist one, Israeli one or any other flag which may cause upset to someone.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

The flag is fine IMO. More on that in a minute.

I'd be much more concerned about the camel and the palm tree. If you have a photo to work from, all the better. I was in Sinai in 2010. The only palm trees or camels I saw were around hotels, but of course I only saw a small part of the area.

Piles of rocks and Toyota Land Cruisers.

As far as the flag, we've discussed this a bit here. We all have some social responsibility to consider the impact of our chosen statements on others, you only need to read the FSM guidelines.

Why not?  It's historical, and we still have the First Amendment here in the US.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Our guide Ali and our Bedouin driver Mohammed, I kid you not. I do see palm trees back there- this was near Sharm, before we went cross country.

At Saint Katherine's, location of the Burning Bush at the foot of Jebel Musa.

My personal feelings are I would not.  With all their US recruitment in the news, and the thought of it being posted on open forums on the net, I would not really care to end up on anyone's watch list, being classified as a potiential sympathizer. With maybe a shot up/burned out technical and a couple of "bodies" alongside, then you might be OK.

It sounds like the idea of the diorama/vignette is for the Bedouin warrior to have the flag as trounced or some sort of trophy like in this classic photo.

Nobody would mistake these paratroopers for enemy sympathizers

Stik-  I heartily agree, but times, places and mores were way different then.  In todays world, some people would wonder.  Hence my suggestion of at least a destroyed vehicle.  Especially with just a (typically dressed) Bedouin in the scene.  Would also add more intrest to it, at least for me.  Maybe have the camel standing on it with one hoof.

Just trying to take as much ambiguity out of it as possible.

I have no issues with it. I mean come on, first too many folks get in an uproar over the General Lee Charger and the Stars and Bars now you're worried about IS flag? Do it and to hell with everyone. This is the USA and we have the right to do whatever we want in our kits/diorama. Besides, who's gonna see it anyways?

ConfusedProbably not a comparison I would have made...

Anyways, the thing to do is consider where and how you choose to display your model for others to see. For instance, if it were me and I planned to have a WIP thread here, I'd extend the courtesy to Aaron to preview the content and gert FSMs ok.

Yes goldhammer you've got my idea right. The Bedouin will be seen as victorious with the flag under the camels hoof. Plus the name plaque "Bedouin of the Siani join the fight AGAINST extremism" clearly spells out what's going on. In no way could it be seen as a nod for IS. No vehicles or bodies needed IMO. Perhaps I'll just make the flag black with some partial white lettering that is indecipherable?

Thanks for the post Gmorrison. Looks like a cool trip! From what I've read the Bedouins are good people like 99.9% of muslim/Arab peoples. I think it was a cool story that they were standing up to the bullies/ extremists in defence of their lands and lifstyle. I want to give them a nod with this vignette.

I think you should do it.  Too many people are too sensitive about too many things while others try to keep others quiet or force them to see things in a way the original person had not intended.  You're depicting a moment in history, even though that exact pose my not have happened or probably happened several times.  There's nothing vulger about it and while it's true that some might object to this simple scene, you do have the right to depict it.

I  have seen dioramas showing things that I objected to, like a large scene at a national  that showed a village in Vietnam being attacked by a F-4 and looted by the G.I.s at the same time with a huey lifting a water Buffalo.  I found this insulting to all the people I worked with as well as every other G.I. in the war, but felt that it should stay in the contest.

It makes me a little mad just thinking that I have reservations. A little bit of my freedom has been taken away, subconciously.

Don't be mad. Your reservations could be a sign of maturity.

Personally, I don't have a problem with your idea given its title and context.

Remember that while you have freedom of artistic expression, everyone else has the same freedom to criticize you. The FIrst Amendment discussion is a red herring. The freedom of speech protects individuals from from government censorship. It does not protect anyone against criticism from other people.

Do it. As a Vet, i like the idea of our enemys defeat. Youre not using it as a sign of support. youre using it as a demonstration peace for overcoming the enemy. I would like to see it when its done. Good luck with the build.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm not much on wips but when I finish the vignette I'll post it in the diorama forum. Much appreciated.

I don't know who would be offended by the way you want to display that rag, unless they're supporters of that bunch, of course. And I personally wouldn't worry about offending any of them. Build it the way you want. I'm very interested in seeing what you come up with.

These Bedouin are no easy group either. They took the Arab Spring as a real opportunity to get freedom from Egypt. Killed a lot of Egyptians. Flirted with Al Quada as a means of separation.
