That's an impressive collection Fermis. Looks a lot like a collection I saw at an IPMS show in Livonia, was that you?

That is quite possible....likely, even!

Last year, maybe? I know I didn't go this year, as it was openning day of deer season.

I'm pretty sure it was last spring, or maybe even the year before? I can't remember exactly when it was but I do remember spending a bit of time admiring them.

On my bench: Academy 1/35 UH-60L Black Hawk

1/48 Tamiya. 1/72 Airfix or Tamiya but I prefer Airfix

I still have a fondness for the old Monogram P-51B in 1/48, which is still produced today in the Revell catalog.  I'd look for old original boxings, though, because I think the molds were in better shape then.

Ditto. Thats a great model.

in 1/72 I'd vote the Tamiya D.

I'd buy my 8th Airfix 51D, before I'd buy a 2nd Tamiya 51D in 72nd. If nothing else, the price is WAY better and you have the flaps up/down option.

Short of the markings...can ya pick out the Tamiya?

The Tamiya 1/48 P-51B is a very nice kit, too, and I recommend it.  The ICM kit of the same subject is a copy of the Tamiya kit, and it loses something in the translation, with some fit issues, and decals that left a lot to be desired.  But if you can find it cheap, especially the boxing with the additional fret of ground crew figures, it's a bargain.

I'm a novice builder.  I put together a Trumpeter 1/24 scale P-51D.  I might live dangerous this time and do a 1/32 scale.

I know you mentioned 1/32 so the Tamiya one would probably be the cream of the crop in that scale.  I've also been hearing nothing but remarkable things about the Meng offering in 1/48 scale.  I'm not sure if it's out yet but I'd sure love to get my hands on that one.  I've read a few reviews where the builder stated that we may now have a 1/48 Mustang (-D variant) that relegates the 1/48 Tamiya kit to 2nd place.

Better Model of P-51
Posted by gbaron64 on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 9:40 PM

I just put together a Trumpeter P-51 Mustang and want to do another one.  Any suggestions as to which model maker would be best for my second shot?

Thanks

Greg
