Announcing Monogram Mafia IV GB
Posted by stikpusher on Friday, June 9, 2017 10:06 PM

Ok folks, back by popular demand, we are going to have another Monogram Mafia Group Build here. I know that many folks who have participated in previous MM GBs are aware of the upcoming build. But for those new to the site or the subject, here is the information:

Beginning date July 4, 2017

Subject matter- any original Monogram, Revell, or newly added this year, AMT kits, of US origin. Reboxes of kits of non US moldings under a R/M, or AMT label are not allowed. Any scale or genre of kit is allowed, as long as it was molded orginally in the USA. Questions to a kit's eligibility will be determined with reference to Scalemates database. Certain kits, such as those released under the Monogram Promodler line but of Hasegawa origin, are not eligible.

Timespan- no end date for the GB has yet been determined. Participation will pretty much define that. BUT, to participate, as in all the past MM GBs, two kits must be completed within a six month timespan. So for those who begin on opening say of July 4 2017, both of their kits must be completed by January 4 2018.

I will set up the approriate thread in the Group Build forum in the next few days.

Stik-Thanks for starting another round-always a great build to participate in and to watch.

And adding AMT to the mix will be fun-built many of their auto products in my youth.

Will be going thru the stash and picking out two qualifiers-hopefully this will light the spark to start reducing the stash.

Oh boy,

I've been trying to thin out my stash (and am getting ready to send a few kits that I know I won't be able to ever do justice to, to WesleyCharlseSmith for his kids on probation request), but now you have me tempted to go out and pick up one or two old kits that I always wanted to do, but never got around to building when I was younger.

The only question is, should I try to find a copy of the old Monogram P-36, or an interwar biplane like the Hawk P-6E, F-4B, F-11C, F3F, Gulfhawk II, or Stearman models.  Though I have also been wanting to do a passenger jet build for a while (in "made up" markings).  I wonder if there are any old DC-9, 707, 727, or 737 kits out there that would fit the Revell/Monogram/AMT "origin" requirements Stick out tongue

Since Monogram took over Aurora's molds, and Aurora made numerous airliner kits, any of those will qualify.

Cool.  Many years ago I had one of those video games where you started with a single DC-3 after the war and tried to build and run your own airline through to the present day.  Ever since then, I've wanted to do a passenger jet model in the markings of my "made up" airline. Smile

Good luck on your search for those airliners. I'd like to see those markings from your airline one day.

I went through my small stash and found a few that I think qualify.  A few old Monogram's(F-117A, B-26, F-4C)and an older Revell(F-16).  So am I correct in assuming as long as the box says Made in U.S.A. it qualifies?  I didn't go as far as digging in the box and checking the plastic for where it was made.

As long as the kit is an original Monogram or Revell mold of US origin. Which includes any other US companies they absorbed along the way, such as Aurora. I would have to know which F-16 mold it is to be certain, but it more than likely qualifies. But R/M has done some mold trading with companies like Hasegawa and Revell Germany, whose kits they issue under R/M labels, but do not qualify. So it is not strictly the "made in USA" on the box. It is the origin and lineage of the molds. Let us know which exact kit it is, and I will find out if it is eligible.

Hey, Keyda, if you're using the box decals on the F-4, you can change one number on the serial number to replicate a MiG killer from that same squadron.

Actually I was planning on making it into a certain Mig killer, 40660.  It's on display at our local airbase in Niagara Falls.  Big Smile

Good glad all those qualify, gives me a few options.  I know I'll be starting with the F-117A.

Sounds good Keyda. Just remember that this GB does not kick off until July 4.

I was building Mongram, Revell, airfix,AMT, and everything else from 1959 on.  They are still fun kits to build.  I have recently did the Monogram M4 with OTB sandbags and Sdkfz 232 just for fun.  I don't think I'll be doing this is, but everyone have fun.

Got it.  I'll be busy with other things until a few days after that anyway.  B-day party, camping, etc.  Lol.

This is always fun.

I've got a car and a small ship.

Wasn't it TempestJohnny who invented the term?

True, but IIRC that was a reaction. It was in the context of a conversation about the "validity" of using expensive AM stuff and expensive kits versus HvH's standing that a good modeler could achieve the same results with basic Monogram kits and found objects, "gizmology".

Someone said "before the Monogram Mafia jumps down my throat.."

And the Don made an offer that couldn't be refused...

That sounds about right... lol! There was a LOT of bagging on Monogram kits on here a few years back. There still is some, but not like it used to be. I'm sure you remember.

Come on Stik, who wants to build Mongram kits when you got shiny new complicated,Hasegawa,Dragon,Great Wall,Zouki-Mura kits.

Everyone knows the more, expensive, complicated, and the more parts a kit has, the better.

Wink seriously, some great builds have come out of those past campaigns, enjoy everyone.

Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in.

Don Stik, please sign me up.  I plan on building Monogram's 1983 boxing of the F-86 in "The Huff" markings (kit # 5427).  I'll also do their 1/48 scale AT-6 Texan (kit # 5306) also from '83.  I think those should be okay, right?

Thanks!

Put me down Stick. I think the last MM I participated in was in 2014 - 15.

I'm sure I can find something and then some. I've been wanting to build the 1/48 B-17 and B-24 for a while now and hang them in the grandsons bedrooms. Maybe this is the excuse.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.
