Hey Greg! Thanks again for your interest! It was quite the adventure as you say. A person we've known for years called today telling us that he saw the display and read each and every information card. He had no idea that I build models and was also suprised at the history of the aircraft. Another good report.

Always good hearing from you on the Forum, you seem to be a good sport and modeler, I must say!

I somehow managed to miss your post during the display, Max.

Holy Cow did that end up nice! Seeing that in person would be enough to make me take up modeling, and I already am. Smile

What a nice display, that is an understatement. The bosses press release is way cool, the surprise second article is too, and whomever came up with the headline "Good News" deserves a reward. That is clever, and I don't see clever much in the printed news.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this adventure, Max.

Big congrads to you and the better half for this Max! Great way to bring the hobby to the public.

And getting everything home with only minor damage is a nice bonus.

Here's a picture I promised of a Skyray on loan for the display. More views under Aircraft along with a short story. Check it out!

Patrick! Again, thank you for your comments! I also worry about our up-coming youth. I'm also a biology oriented guy and the wife and I promote youth oriented educational wildlife field trips and lectures on our property. We have developed a wildlife area not only for wildlife, but for education even up to college level. My greatest memory of our efforts was when we took 30 5th graders seining in a small wetland. City kids in a workshop. The first dip brought up crawfish, tadpoles and fresh water shrimp and all the extras. Kids had mud on their faces and all emptied their water bottles to replace the contents with tadpoles, crawfish and such critters in this enviroment. The enthusiasm was unbelievable! Never have I been so satisfied with our effort. Never. They had never experienced this in their lives. We had made a difference.

Anyway,  It seems we both agree that educating youth, the new citizens and leaders, is necessary and fullfilling. Keep up the good work!

Patrick! It's just me being me. I'm humbled by your support. What fun it has been freeing  the models from my office where you have to drag people in to see them. Finally they are free for a small period of time to hopefully demonstrate model building, History (a big one) and hopefully setting goals for others while having fun. I'm trying in my mind to pin down what model building is all about. To me, problem solving is one of the draws. When we apply ourselves it can be rewarding and improve self esteem, all good for young people. Us old people can also set goals with a model and fill otherwise down time with a challenging project. Sharing the experience has always been the problem and exposure is limited. This display has been fullfilling, I guess is the word, to show why we do this. Works of art at least to us, always a test of our skills, disappointments when we don't meet our expectations but always a learning experience. Thanks for your following and support! Geeked  A good experience is happening!

Max, glad you encountered only the minor damage while transporting the display, could have really gone South with more damage. Nice of folks to tell you they enjoyed seeing your work.

I've thought about your remarks, (above,) and what modeling means to you. You hit the points right on. For me, it's mostly about the satisfaction of doing something creative with my hands. I also enjoy problem solving along the way, such as ill fitting bits, warps, sink marks, etc.

For the past nearly 20 years neighborhood kids are drawn to my garage shop, by the noise of the compressor and sounds of airbrushing the models. In summer the garage door is always open, the kid's and sometimes their dad's will stop by to see what's going on, maybe have a question about something. I'm fortunate to have gotten many young ones started, several are now young adults and still at the hobby, often stopping by to say hi.

Some comments from parents about what was of value in getting them started, is doing something challenging, learning to do something complicated, following instructions, and mostly patience. They just see the build project through. More than a few parents have said the kids spend much less time on video games and texting, also do better in school.

The local hobby shop displays their models, which makes them even more proud of the work they accomplished. The hobby shop knows some of them will be customers for the long haul, another good feature.

In Winter I build scale balsa stick and tissue free flight models, the kids enjoy that as well. During the cold and wet months we build several, then either fly them at the local armory, or wait for summer and fly in a large open field.

Maybe next year you could do another, smaller display, and the library could invite a few other modelers to join in. It looks like the effort you made was really well received and appreciated by the community, who knows where this could all lead. Anyway, you did something really outstanding for your neighbor citizens, I wish I lived closer, I'd take you out for a burger and a brew. Mrs. Max too, she helped a whole bunch.

Thanks, Max.

Congratulations on the successful display.  I can't help but wonder how many people who viewed your excellent collection were inspired to give model building a go.

That was a huge undertaking, but defintiely worth the effort.  They definitely picked the right guy.  Your collection is amazing.

Well done!!

Dwayne or Dman or just D.  All comments are welcome on my builds.

How do you transport 32 aircraft, a Space Shuttle and one tank? Answer: A Jeep Grand Cherokee, carefully, two trips. Whew, the show is over and was quite successful according to the head Librarian. Thanks to my wife Eweleen's media blitz, turnout far exceeded our expectations. The Library staff reported many people from surrounding communities fifty miles or more. One mistake was not providing a guest sign-in book to see actual numbers, something to consider for anyone else who tries this. Lotta work, but fun and rewarding. Several times during the month people would come up to us in the local restaurant that we frequent and comment on seeing the show and how they enjoyed it.

Now that all craft have successfully returned to base I can post a damage report due to my clunking around. Report: Two pitot tubes broken, one antennae bent and a landing gear door knocked loose. All very minor for such a mass deployment and quite repairable!

That's the report, I think I'll go set in the Great chair with a beer and contemplate all of this great adventure!

Hi, Max -

This whole display effort, is among the most significant contributions to the model building hobby I have seen. No one can ever know how many kids and adults will be inspired enough to try the hobby, then get started on a life long enjoyment.

Your time and effort may well have introduced someone to the activity, that might never have considered it before. Really nice of you Max, thank you very much.

Eweleen's media blitz continues to amaze me. The first newspaper coverage was from a regional SE Kansas publication. Today our city newspaper gave us a half page write-up with three color pictures. The Library still reports good traffic particularly from nearby towns due to the regional coverage. A radio station in an adjoining county interviewed our local Librarian and it was broadcast in the local area. The perfect storm!

Years ago I built a Skyray F4D for a good friend, pilot and hero from the past. Today he brought it to me to add it to the display for the duration. The Skyray is marked with his numbers as he flew it. I'll feature some photos of it after the show. Another childhood hero flew the F-84 shown below. He even tossed a dummy nuke as shown on the model!

Thanks for all the comments Gang! Funny, everytime I go in to check or add someting, I imagine myself as a kid opening the Library door and seeing this display. I would have just fritzed out at the time! Hopefully, this will fritz out other young people. Certainly not a bad hobby to introduce kids to. Most certainly an introduction to history. Problem solving is a big part of modeling, all good for young brains. All positive and fun!---still! Geeked

I can't think of a better way to introduce modeling and for that matter the joy of researching , history and reading in general to an otherwise unaware public of our great hobby. You and your wife make an excellent team in highlighting  these subjects as well. I'm sure that you both have touched many lives when viewing your fine display. A great honor for a great model builder.

Hey wow congrads Max! And thanks for the photos Scott! Great job all around everyone involved.

My local library isn't that large but they do have a few display cases. I've got to take some books back next weekend so maybe I'll ask them about doing something in the same vein but a smaller scale.

The "Century of Flight" display at our Public Library is doing quite well thanks to my dear wife and her press releases to local newspapers and the Library Web site. The nice ladies who work at the Library report good traffic on the display. What fun and Wow!!

Hey Max,

My dentist called and was able to get me in this am, so while waiting, I popped over and saw the exibit.

Its fanstastic, right in the main lobby and well laid out.  One of the staff of the library came over and walked me through the exhibit and was happy to explain some of the aircraft flown by locals, including an AT6 by some dude named Max.  There were a few kids that came over and joined the tour.

I hope this exhibit will spark more interest in history and for the hobby in our area.

Again, great job Max and kudos to your wife.  You both shown your professions as presenters.

I included a few shots  of the overal exhibit.

Scott
