Model Kits That Make You go Hmmmm...

 That " Civil War Blockade Runner " was a poorly rendered version of a generic steam " Runner " . At one time Pyro tried to pass it off as the " Harriet Lane " . Nice practice for a better ship though .

 The only B-58 I ever built was Monogram's with the Pod that you could drop and three cockpits you could open .

 The Civil War gun and Figures again were Pyro's attempt to broaden the product line . Not great , but , good practice for better stuff .    .T.B.

As a kid, I built two different B-58s; a box scale one by Monogram with the dropping weapons pod and this old Lindberg one. That's what I got it for, nostalgia.

Rob>  Well, the B-58 is not a bad kit (not exactly a good kit either).  With some elbow-grease it can be turned into a nice model.

The Lindberg Civil War artillery is interesting.  I was trying to find some information on it last night and discovered it was selling elsewhere for rather exorbitant prices, some over $100.00!

One kit I ran across on Amazon from Lindberg I have not seen, and that is the Civil War Blockade Runner, a side-wheel steamer.  Wish I had known about that one back in my wargaming days!

 What the heck is that ? We ain't got them in TEXAS I don't think . Lindberg ? Yeah , know them well . Have a personal link to the corporate past in a friendship . Recommended the Product for newbies wanting to do a model they could chop up if necessary to create something else .

 Why ? Not Expensive . Four Tirpitzes and one Bismark later I still do . They made neat carriers and Liners ! I even took one Hood and turned  itinto a great looking Tanker ! Tuna Clipper ? Nah ! Back when it was a Pyro kit , turned it into a Motor Yacht !

 Lindberg's Air Force Rescue Boat converted to a nice one too ! The Tug now , That used to be clunky when Pyro had it . Lindberg changed nothing ( That's the former Pyro ) " Despatch # 9 boat . The other one is Lindberg's own . Coast Guard Tug , Unlikely .

 I guess if you want them Go to Ollies ?

 

Ollie's is similar to Big Lots and Odd Lots. Back in the late 90s, I was able to score all of the old Esci/AMT/Ertl tank kits like the T-55, M60 Blazer, Ti-67 kits for $4.99 when I was stationed in Alabama. Even found a bunch of the Star Trek Deep Space 9 kits for $4.99 as well.

I received a flyer in the mail today from Ollies Discount Store.  In it, they said they had made a large purchase of model kits from a supplier that had gone out of business, and they listed Revell, Monogram, AMT, etc. (though no list of what the kits were).  So I dropped by our local one since it was so close (about 1 1/2 miles).

I was very disappointed, as any Revell or Monogram kits were cars, and I had no interest in them.  They had LOTS of old Lindberg kits, and what caught my eye was not the ships, or tanks, but the B-58 Hustler kit.  Now, it's not the most accurate or detailed B-58 kit, but it's only $9.99 so I considered grabbing one to build alongside the old Revell Bear TU-95.  I think they'll be sitting there for awhile, so no rush.  The ad did say they had a warehouse full of these things, so maybe some better variety will come along in a week or so.

Also, they had a lot of the old "Robert E. Lee" paddlewheeler kits, which I once turned into a pretty nice representation of a "tin-clad" steamer.

Anyway, if any of you have an Ollies close, you might want to take a look.  You never can tell.

Gary, I bought the same B-58 kit when I went to Ollie's outside of Fort Knox because of the flyer. It's molded in white whereas the original kit was molded in silver. I did buy a 2016 Camaro as well. Not sure why.

Another item I had an interest in was the Monitor and Merrimack set. I built it long ago and still have the Monitor in my display cabinet. I've had that kit for well over twenty years, probably closer to 30.

I went by Ollie's again today to check on any new arrivals, and they did have some, but nothing I wanted to shell out $10.00 for.  This time, I decided to snap some photos just to show what the selection was like.

There was another section of Lindberg vehicles, but I didn't take photos of that.  On top of this stack were the Robert E. Lee steamship models.

Yup... that's the exact stock at my local Ollie's... My guess they all get the same stuff regardless.

Yes, no, maybe?  It's actually built from several different P-51s, so I can't say.  They call it a "Heinz-51".    I think it's mostly a "D".  The aircraft is at the "Global Power Museum" located at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, LA.  I took that image on a cold and windy day back in February of 2013.

 Scare ? Can you say a kick in the patootie ? Anyway slowly mending and catching up on my modeling . The Lee , with a slight bit of Modification can become the J.M.White ( Truly the " Palace "of that era . The White's surpassed the Lee's ( there were four I believe ) .

Opulence  ,In every way , Was the byword with creature comforts way beyond the Lee class boats !  The White's had a true Grand Staircase that makes the Lee's look commonplace . Fret and Fancy work you wouldn't believe .

 One J.M.White took seven months to finish .That was just the Fancywork and Passenger areas . No Expense spared ! One boat , I believe No.4 , even had Teak planks overlaying the usual polished Oak decks !

 You have seen me write about the CC Cutter . That , according to the crew and officers of Coast Guard Rio Vista , was the most accuarate " Cape Class " out there and yes , the model reflects her at the end of WW -2 !

   I never could figure Lindberg's fascination with Weld markings raised above the surface ! I guess thet was like Revell and Monogram's ubiquitous rivets on airplanes . Of course that was no worse , I guess , than the Bulwarks on many ships that in 1;1 would be two feet thick ! 

  Ah Well ! they are fun to build anyway ! My friend credited the engineers and tooling folks with those lines !

TB>  Yes, it's a discount store.  I never saw one while living in Texas, and only became aware of them in the last year or so after moving back to Alabama.  Nothing really special about them except for the odd model bargain every now and then.

I go to Ollies at least once a month since it's near the Kroger's and bookstore in my area. I have found some real good modelling bargains in the past, Testors/italeri JS2, Sturmtiger, and Jadpanzer for 30$ after Xmas about 10 years ago. There selling for $40+ on Ebay now. Got a couple AMT planes for Weekend Madness GBs for $6-7. And not to long ago a Minicraft PBY 144th with suprising detail for $5. Oh, and I got 6 cans of Rustoleum sandable primer(black, white, and gray) for $12. Even if they don't have any good models, or books(they have a TON of those WWII campaign books people sometimes mention on this forum for cheap) I leave the store with gum and a big bag of M+Ms!

Well, a 30 to 45 minute drive might be a bit far, but the one near me has a discount book store that is well stocked, and I have purchased a couple of good air war history books there (for about 4 or 5 bucks apiece).  Just a reminder.

PS. In general I kind of actually like the old Lindberg models.  I've never been a great model builder and those old kits always seemed reasonably cheap enough but also good to me for experimenting and kitbashing and/or just messing around with

I agree. I tend to stay away from Lindbergh kits for that same reason. Sucky fit and inaccuracies.

I'm no ship modeler, but having run across these kits I checked some build reviews and opinions.  The best suggestion was just stay away from them.  I saw the "Tirpitz" at our local Ollie's, but its reputation is not too good.  Consider them "toys" you have to put together.

OTOH, some of their "civilian" ships are not bad, as long as you're not counting on a lot of detail and not trying to make a particular ship (as I understand).

One of the things that interested me in this was the mention of "Polar Lights" in the flyer.  Well, I'll check in every once in a while to make sure.  Lots of cheap stuff in Ollie's I need anyway.

Just stopped at my local Ollie’s store. Mostly Lindbergh but one caught my eye... 1/400 scale HSM Hood kit. Held back in buying it due to their reputation of being inaccurate and poor fit. Sure enough, after digging enough for reviews on the Lindbergh HSM Hood kit, it wasn’t good due to Lindberg’s reputation as a kit. Not worth spending $13...

My local Ollie’s carries mostly Lindbergh kits as well. Nothing worth pick8n* up. However, do keep watch around Christmas shopping season. That’s when you might get a bit of a variety than usual.

Think about it, no one thinks to find model kits in Ollie’s.....

I picked up that same Lindberg B-58 kit a couple weeks ago.  I figured what the heck it's only ten bucks.  Nothing else of interest though, not to me anyway.  Certainly no Revell or Monogram.
