1/350 USS Intrepid
Posted by k.apland on Monday, November 26, 2018 1:15 AM

Hi all, well she finally arrived!!! Funny story, it only took 2 days to get from Miami FL to Vancouver BC (THANK YOU USPS!!) .....and then 15 days to travel from Vancouver to Edmonton lmao. Oh Canada post...but thats a different discussion for a different forum lol. I am grateful it arrived with no damage. $350 Canadian, i wont lie, i was worried it would be crushed by the time i got it. Wish i could figure out how to upload pics into this post....just to show how nice the kit is!! I have a Tamiya 1/350 Enterpise (my second one) still in box, and i think the Intrepid, though smaller, has way more detail. She also comes with PE parts. With that, in my research while she made her long voyage to me, i found another PE kit for her. Tetra Models apparently makes a full PE kit for it. So i was like i need that!!! then i looked at the price....lol after $350 for the model im not spending another $200 for PE.....ill be saving that money for the deck equipment that the kit did not come with and extra aircraft to add to the small airwing. The kit only comes with 4xF8  4xA4  4xA1 4xUH2 & 2xE1B. But i found extra F8 and A4 from Larsenal. Anyways, hopefully i can figure out how to upload pics so i can show off this legend and the other very soon after!!

well i can guaranty you that you will not see a Tomcat on her flight deck!! lol. As far as i know, and correct me if im wrong, but she was decommissioned in 73-74?? So yes the kit is Vietnam-era. I would like to do CVW-10 cruise 1968-69.

Excellent! I've been tempted many times to get this kit but so far have not so maybe you'll be my inspiration. You mentioned finding extra aircraft from Larsenal. Are they molded in clear like the much hated Trumpeter ones or are they in gray?

Best of luck and keep us informed.

The Larsenal ones are grey-ish plastic and come in a pack of 5, then i found another set by Corsair Armada, little more expensive and you only get 4. Both brands sell the F8 and the A4. I did check out a website, Shapeways, they have 3D printed A-4C, E, F, & TA-4J all with bombs & drop tanks attached....they also have the F8. So i may order some and see what they are like. Im deffinetly ordering deck equipement from them as they have some cool stuff like bombs/drop tanks on carts as well as engines on carts. They have some cool stuff. Cheap to!!

I have gotten some 20mm and 5 inch submarine deck guns in both 1/72 and 1/144 from Shapeways........absolutely beautiful pieces.  If what you are looking at is the same quality, you WILL be impressed.

In '68/69 she should have had F4's on board as well.

Hadn't done any research on her.  Now see she was a light attack and ASW platform, so you are probably correct in her not having any Phantoms aboard.

My bad.

A-1s for sure. A-4D and F-8U.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I don't think Intrepid, or any of the 27-Charlie Essexes operated Phantoms. The F-4's were kept to the Forrestal and later, larger carriers. The Essex air wings would have been F-8's, A-4's and early on, A-1's.

Hope this Helps,

Tom
