Oddest Comment heard at model show any takers

At least tthose in the UK have a hobby community to refer to. Here in the Midwest, I walked into a Hobby Shop that advertised as having "The widest selection of models with the most tknowledgeable staff." Approaching the manager, I asked if I could place an order for detail kits from Verlinden and Eduard. The manager replied, "Sorry, never heard of them." Keep in mind, Verlinden is manufactured in the same state!

The two guys did not look like Bill & Ted, and they left in a car rather than a phone booth.

There was one incident in a hobby shop that really annoyed me. A couple of scale RC people came in to get markings info for their models. They started putting down us plastic modelers - asking why we didn't build REAL models like they did. I was still flying at the time so in return I asked them why they weren't flying real airplanes rather than their overgrown toys. I really don't feel that way about RC planes and the people who fly them. I have a couple of friends that fly RC. Those two guys just really p---ed me off ! I guess every hobby has it's share of people with "attitudes".

As I was entering a 1/12 scale motorcycle in a local show, filling out the entry card, one of the contest organisers sitting at the desk, impressed with the model (it WAS a very good model) said "WOW!! Did YOU make that?"

Well, the best one I think I've ever heard was at Colonial Photo and Hobby shop. Went right up to the front desk, and asked if they carried an EA-6B Prowler. The answer I got, honest to God, was,"What kind of train is that?". Nevermind he was manager of the aircraft department...

Not really that odd, but just struck me as funny at the time. Was in a hobby shop in the airplane model section, when I overheard a couple of guys in the nearby car section discussing the the merits of dfferent kits. They kept calling each other "dude". My curiosity got the better of me and I went over to see if it were Bill & Ted.

A couple of years ago, a buddy of mine built a model of Tor Heyerdals Kon-Tiki. The only plastic parts used were the radio and jerry cans they used to carry water. The rest of the model was completely hand-carved, scratchbuilt and weathered to perfection. Over 12" long and completely accurate, he entered it in a large contest in Denver. It won First in it's class, Peoples Choice and Best in Show. As he was going to collect it and leave, he passed a couple other competitors and heard one say - "I can't believe it won. It's just a bunch of sticks!"

I overheard this in my local hobby shop a few weeks ago. Couple walked in. Hubby was looking at the array of enamels and acrylics. Wife stepped up and said "you can get a lot more at Sherwin-Williams, and they give you a stirrer to go with each can you buy." Hubby tried to explain he wanted to spray paint a model car, wife said "you can just brush the Sherwin-Williams on like you did with the house." Go figure. Hubby never did get his Testors cans. -Ed :)

Model show in Idaho. I entered a Sherman tank parked off the side of a road. Oil was all over the rear of the tank, running all over the ground and the engine compartment was open. Another Sherman and half track was passing on the road. A man from the passing Sherman was yelling something to the disabled tank. I named the diorama "Get a horse". A judge remarked, "It would have been a possible winner if he hadn't spilled something all over the rear of the tank".

"You guys must buy Elmers glue by the gallon." 'nuf said

I heard this in a hobby shop conversation once:

"What colour did they paint bare metal aircraft in real life?"

and in regards to a very well finished Avro Lancaster model:

"What sort of fool paints the belly of their bomber black? The Germans would have seen that from miles away!" (the guy who said that was the son of a WWII RAF bomber crewman! We thought he was joking with that comment, but he was serious)

Well these are some odd comments, not necessarily heard at model shows...

This happened at a show in Pennsylvania a few years back:

In the middle of an awards ceremony, all are intently listening to the announcer when all of a sudden, from the back of the crowd, a woman screamed, "I TOLD YOU TO STAY OUT OF MY LIFE!!" Everything just STOPPED. Everyone turned around, the announcer was still in his announcing stance, microphone up to his mouth, head tipped forward to read the judging sheets but peering over the top of his bi-focals, and there was utter silence for about 5 seconds. Then, everyone turned back around, all at once, just as the announcer continued reading as if nothing had happened.

This was uttered at one of our weekly Saturday Groovy Get-togethers at Guido's:

Wayners brings in the new Hasegawa 48th F-8 Crusader for us to peruse. Upon opening the box and inspecting the kit, the Goon says, "What's up with all the plastic pieces?" Wayners rebutts, with a straight face, "It's a a PLASTIC model kit, Dave". (Dave was referring to the large number of plasticized rubber bearings included in the kit but, as usual, let go with another of his now trademarked "Davisms". Other examples of Davisms: "Armor Piercing Armor", "Tuskaheegee Airmen", "Fuselarge", "Gear Struct" and "Rex Area". This last was uttered on the way to a show at the USAF Museum in Dayton. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one though, it had been a long drive... strangely, he has no problem with the pronunciation of such words as "archeological".)

At one of our Mall Shows, a guy walked up to us and said the following, "I figured out what the I, the M and the S stand for, but what's the P?" We told him "Plastic" at which point he asked if the models were made of metal. Nice guy, though.

There are others, but I can't recall them at the moment. Goin' to the Rock tonite and hopefully the boys will help refresh my memory!

Weirdest comment I ever heard was at the nationals at Telford last year. Two guys at a club stand were arguing over which sea harrier had the most accurate shade of grey. The thing is they were both painted the same colour, as the bloke who painted both models helpfully pointed out. To which the two guys replied "the one on the left is completely wrong"
I guess us kitbashers are a hard bunch to please sometimes.........
