Photo hosting recommendations?
Posted by Aaronw on Sunday, November 24, 2019 6:17 PM

In recent years I have had a significant loss of interest in building models. This happens to correspond with the great Photo Bucket Phiasco (TM) although I'm not going to blame them, it certainly didn;t help, but there were a lot of contributing factors.

I had been using Photobucket since my re-entry to modellig around 2002. I switched to Postimage which is ok, but I'm not terribly thrilled with its photo organization.

Since modelling accounted for probably 90% of my hosting needs PI has been adequate. As I start to get back into modelling more heavily it wouldn't hurt to see what else might have popped up to fill the void in the years since.

So what can you recommend? Since documenting models can be rather complex, I'd really like something that has good organization system. Free is always nice, but reasonable fee services are acceptable if they are good and easy to use.

I use imageshack ($20 a year).  Super easy to post up pics here and you can set up albums as needed.

I used to use Photobucket, but have switched to Postimage. It is free, easy to use, and uploads faster than photobucket ever did.

I use IMGUR. It is also free.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Join Facebook, create an album, upload photos, they can even be smartphone photos, and then link them here. It is free.

Here is a tank photo linked from my Facebook album.

I use IMGUR as well.  I suggest searching for "photohosting sites".  Find the one that would work best for you and download them.  Follow their instructions for uploading pictures and for for posting them.

The OP said he didn't like Postimage.

I, like GH, have used Imageshack for years and love it. It's very easy to use.

I used Imageshack for about 3 years and was paying $20 and loved it. Then upon renewal they jacked the price to $40 and would not respond to my emails asking them why the steep fee. I also had a problem with the site being down for a couple of days and again no messages were answered.

So i dropped them and went with PostImage and I'm very satisfied with it so far. I know the OP said he doesn't like PI but just wanted to comment specially about Imageshack doubling their fee.

I'm certain that any decline in interest in modeling is purely coincidental to Photobucket's disastrous marketing fiasco.

As far as replacements go, I use Postimage, too, and I agree about its features.  It really is a bare-bones hosting site.  It would be nice to sort images by title, for example.

Its major drawback is the owners' habit of letting their site registration expire.  That's happened twice now-their registration expired, and the address at the time was grabbed and held for ransom.  They wound up registering a different address, which meant having to edit old links in posts, to point back to the stored image.

But it is free of charge, so far.

In the meantime, too, Photobucket has walked back from its "If you want your images linked, pay us $500 a year" campaign, and offers accounts similar to what it offered before.  I doubt that very many of its previous customers returned, though.

I use Fotki. It runs $ 24 a year, and has NO ads.

It's organization is similar to Photobucket, and it may not be too sophisticated but it works quickly.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I tried many. Flickr was the last one I used until they limited how any photos you can have before you have to pay. I ended up creating my own website/blog for all my models. Costs a lot less than hosting sites.

Image Shack here. It is a pay site but it's worth it since it supports the site- no ads at all.

Sure PhotoBucket was free before the big shake-up but the pop-up ads made the site almost unusable.

I had no problem with Photobucket, till they made that disastrous decision to offer linking only for $499 a year.

I started with them with a free account, till I used up the allotted storage space.  At that point, I took the minimum account, which was $50 a year, I think.  That was working fine, no popup ads, as you mentioned, and it was a good amount of storage space, for the money.  I'd still be with them, if they hadn't made that change.

I wouldn't be surprised if the MBA who came up with that one was given the boot.

Ok, so it looks like most of the same as before and still quite a spread.

Postimage works and its free, so not much to complain about. I like the no frills aspect compared to PB which was becoming overloaded with social media add ons.

I'd just like more organization options, but maybe more of an issue of change and getting used to something different.

I'll have another look at the others as well, thanks.

It's a change, true, but it's also a poor design.  But you get what you pay for.

A lot of applications are designed without much thought of what the end-users think.

Hi all In other websites not only including model airplane forums, you can insert an image from desktop within 3 seconds. Here on FSM you have to have a third photo hosting party. Come on what gives? I belong to this group and loading so easy a caveman can do it. Dai

As has been mentioned before, it has to do with the host deciding not to take on the additional file storage.

You cite Tapatalk.  Before Hyperscale moved there, it also did not allow uploading image files, because the webmaster and owner of the site did not want to incur the storage expense.  Now that Hyperscale is on Tapatalk, we can upload images.  The cost of storage is apparently not an issue for Tapatalk.

Using linked images is also so easy a caveman can do it.

Yep Steve it sure sounds like it. No loss tough since PI is free and has no pop ups or junk and is very easy to operate.

Hi,

Although this likely won’t be as cheap as just paying a yearly subscription to a Photohosting site, an alternate possibility could be to register your own domain and have it hosted by one of the low-cost hosting services avaialble.

I did this many years ago for a small webpage that I have put together on modern ship design. And at that domain I created some subfolders for posting the images and such that I sometimes reference in many of the forums that I visit.

In addition, through the domain and hosting service I was also able to set up my own email accounts.

As such, although it may not be your 1st choice, if you are only interested in posting photos, its not a bad option, especially if you also want to maybe create a webpage dedicated to your model building, etc (or if you or someone in your family wants to set up a webpage devoted to one of their other hobbies).  And, as mentioned above you likely typically will have the added benefit that you can make up email addresses for you and your family members at whatever the domain name is that you register.
