My cousin owes EVERY modeler on Earth an apology with his comment......what you think?
Posted by KAYSEE88 on Sunday, February 23, 2020 8:25 AM

He came over.  We were about to go out for dinner, and i had 45 mins to spare.  So i sat down and decided to glue a few tiny pieces onto a model i started 4 days ago.  I went to work with my tweezers and tube cement.

He bent down to look and said "God, you people are retards! Those are just toys.  They aren't even REAL or anything.....besides, when you die all that stuff is going to be crushed by the garbage man outside anyways!"

I can't describe my feelings even to this day about what was said.  This happened almost a year ago.  I just don't hang out with him as much, lets put it that way!

What do you guys think?  Would you have reacted if you were me? If yes, how?

I wouldn't say he has issues with modelers, just grumpy?

With an attitude like his, wonder what makes him get out of bed every morning...

Jack

Most people that I’ve come across in life with that attitude seem to be generally unhappy with life and try to bring others down with them.

My rebuttal would be asking him what he does for relaxation and creativity (if anything)? I have found that those without some sort of art form in their lives; and yes, modelling is most definately an artform; tend to be dull, ignorant and of course, opinionated.

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

Anybody's hobbies may seem pointless to those who have no interest in them. I've never seen the appeal of golf or collecting old bottles, myself.

However, age and wisdom...or sometimes sheer politeness...should teach most of us to smile and nod and keep our mouths shut.

Sounds like your cousin may have issues other than simply with your harmless hobby. Don't let it bother you. Big Smile

Anyone that still uses the word "retard" has his own issues, like never mentally maturing past the age of 10.

Ignorance leads to fear.  Fear leads to hate.  Hate leads to the Dark Side.

Oh wait, we are talking about a non-modeler making unkind remarks.  Ah so what?  We all die and our stuff goes to the dump. Who cares?  Our models bring us happiness here and now.  That is all that matters.

So, what achievement/permanent monument is your cousin leaving behind after his demise?  A cure to cancer or world hunger?  A Nobel Prize?  We need no apology from him, as it would be worth as much as his opinion.

Well he's your cousin, probably just busting your chops as cousins may do.I dare say that even though he feels that way,he probably wouldn't be calling us names to our faces.

But if my cousins or close friends started in on me,I would just give right back to them.

Yes, that is definitely hurtful.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Katsee88;

What your cousin said is Hurtful. Now,that said think for a minute. Does building little miniatures of things bring you happiness?

Think about him now. What does he have for a hobby? Maybe he's a Couch Potato! In that case I would wonder which couch manufacturer makes the couch he likes best?

No, You be the Big, Understanding one here and realize he is only voicing what many feel about our hobby. They feel the same way about Model Train layouts too. So let it pass.

I don’t do train layouts, but I think they and the people who do them are awesome.  That is why I love the old Jerry Andersen “Thunderbirds” - the miniature backgrounds made the show.

By any chance were you building a US military subject?  If so, I would say “there are brave men and women that develop, build, and operate the real version of what I’m creating.  Those people defend your freedom to make such an opinion of model building.  I don’t agree with your opinion but I love that you are free to make it.”

if it wasn’t a US subject you just ignore it and make him pay for dinner.

Everything gets "modeled" , especially before it is mass produced. It's how we learn.

Let's hope your Cousin does not get mass produced.   Sounds a bit like he is too big a radar reflection for our soceity.

   Nino.

Edit... Oh, and No apology needed. I was in Customer Service for many decades. It takes all kinds to make this world. He may be right, the old models may get dumped in the trash. Your cousin can come pick'em up.

This depends on the age of your cousin, so my answer would depend on who I am talking to. Is it a child, an entitled man child, a grown ____ man, a grumpy old man, etc.?

It is a hobby, much like any artistic endeavor; painting, sculpting, drawing, writing poetry, playing an instrument, or participating in sporting event, ging to a concert, game, etc.

It is all time spent enjoying oneself. Some events only provide memories, others, a more physical result.

The real question is his attitude. That conveys that he has some unresolved issues.

We are a bunch of retards.   And it all goes in the dumpster when we die.  All true.

Still fun though :)

Thanks,

No dumpster for me. Gonna get cremated and put in a small urn so that my stash can fit in the Pine Box with me.

Just kidding.  I expect to pass my stuff on to those I want to have it.   I would hate to get dug up just to supply someone with a canopy for their Corsair.

I have been called much worse by far greater men....and women, I'm not offended I EMBRACE it! You build because it brings you joy, a greater understanding of the world around you, and probably alittle like me CURIOUSITY...." Now how the heck does that work???"

Please remember blood is thicker than water, don't give your cousin the satisfaction of an un modeler like response. I also agree that next time HE pays for dinner. Your ALWAYS welcome here.

we're modelers it's what we do

He couldn't hack it, huh?

Oh For sure it does!  Each morning i wake up to shelves of models that each has their story of why it was bought, and of the joy (and pain) of building them and of the skills gained.  In recent years I've been blessed to have been reached out to by many a customer who found my work to be well worth the quantity of money charged!  So yes, i'm even MORE happy with my hobby now than ever before Stick out tongueWink

Meh, probably would have laughed then chased him around the room with a spitfire model, strafing him.

Close friends of mine organized and run a program to hang banners around their town to honor and remember vets. I build models for a lot of reasons, and one of them is to honor and remember the people who fought in those machines.

I don't think Lt. William Saks would think my model of "Enchantress" is stupid.

A slightly different takeon this, especially it you're both adults.

You had company and you went off to work on a model? Do I have that correct? That's just plain rude. It happened a year ago and you're still bothered by it.  Something wrong with this picture.

I'd be pretty upset, too, if I went to see a friend and instead of sociaizing with me he went off to do something that didn't include me. You messed up, you were both wrong. , you need to let this incident go.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Some people have more guts than a slaughter house, with enough mouth for three sets of teeth, just be glad to not be like them. Why let someone like that cause us to be upset?????
