Paint reactions to top coating
Posted by AircraftGav148 on Thursday, July 23, 2020 12:36 PM

I am relatively new to modelling and focus on WW2 1:48 Aircraft. I have just finished a US Wildcat and painted the upper with Mr Hobby - Mr Colour 367 and that was fine - nice product. It was hard to get the match for the underside Gull Grey US Navy and the best iIcould find was Mr Hobby Aqueous Hobby Colour 315 a water based Acrylic and it has been a nightmare with regards to top coating. First I used the Pledge stuff which is recomended by lots of tutorials  and was fine with the upper paint. But with the underside it seemed to melt the paint and if I was not careful would run into the upper coat. In an effort to rectify I bought Micro Flat (a US made product)  matt water based varnish - again fine on the upper paint but when it dried on the Aqueous there was what I can only describe as "orange peel" effect in places on the wings - but not on the fuselage. I've decided to leave it be now rather than try and fine rub down etc

Any ideas or suggestions for future models - I am put right off using water based acrylics for aircraft now but have just bought some Tamiya ones for the next plane but holding back for the moment

Hello, welcome to the hobby. For starters, the pledge stuff, or whatever they are calling it now, is crap. It used to be "future floor polish" back in the day and offered a rock hard acrylic gloss surface, conducive to scale modeling. It seems that over the years they have somehow managed to change the formula and now it won't cure. I suggest you switch to something that is designed for modeling. I use Tamiya X-22 clear cut with Mr leveling thinner, abour 50/50. Alclad clear gloss is another popular one. They make an enamel or acrylic based one, depending on your needs. Reference the Gull Grey, that sounds like a paint adherence issue if it's peeling. Make sure your washing your parts before painting to remove mold release residue.

The good news is you can still use that pledge on your floors if you'd like. Good luck.

....and you're gonna love Tamiya paints. They can be thinned with isopropyl alcohol, but spray the best with their own lacquer thinner (my opinion).  This paint choice should solve alot of your issues.

I don't use Pledge much  anymore and my bottle is 3-4 years old at that, only because I like other clears better ( I say all that just having shot some over decals this morning lol !). When I do use it it is one product I like my double action airbrush with .3 needle. Because I can put down a couple of fairly dry mist coats and dry it back additionally with just air from the brush. Then increase with wetter coats depending what look I need. But I've never had it hick cup on any painted surface I used it on. Admittedly I have not use Aqueous acrylic from Mr. though.. That said, I agree that you will in most likelyhood like Tamiya acrylics. And you know you like the Mr Color lacquers. I've shot Pledge over Tamiya acrylics with no issue and you've shot it over the lacquer with no issue. So you have that knowledge. I just prefer some other clears for more varied work than I might want to do with Pledge these days, you may or may not.

I wonder if your Aqueous maybe did not dry deep enough before you sprayed on the Pledge. I've put it over so many products I can't imagine it not working unless maybe they have wrecked the formula recently.

One great thing about the FSM forums is the number of specialized forums.  I would suggest monitoring the Painting and Airbrushing forum.  There are some real painting experts who hang there.

I don't use an airbrush (virtually impossible in my small apartment), but I agree about Tamiya acrylics. But I have learned, through hard experience, that they work much better when they are slightly thinned with Tamiya thinner. Unthinned, they dry so fast that hard to avoid brush strokes.
