40% off

Not sure if it's nationwide but my Hobby Lobby has 40% off all model kits.  This isn't the regular coupon offer.

They’ve been doing that almost once a month lately...

They had signs up and down the modeling isle.  Couldn't help but think maybe they are phasing out these products.  There is a Michaels 1/4 mile away and their modeling offerings are nearly non existent.  I don't buy much from these places but I do like the convenience for brushes and some paints.

For the past several months Hobby Lobby has done these 40% off all models for a week long, about once a month. I don’t think that they are getting out of the plastic model business, but they may be selling out some items and replace them with others. Their website shows the 40% off currently, so I would venture that it is a nationwide sale at all stores in the US.

Somebody on here said they asked the manager at their store about it and said they were bringing in new model brands.  Looked like more Gundam and Japanese anime figures than anything else though, the last time I browsed.

You do know you can use the 40% coupon on model kits year round, right? Simply go to the Hobby Lobby link on your phone, click on coupon to take to store. You don't need to wait for sales. I use it all the time when there isn't a sale on model kits.

That was me!  lol

I did speak with the wonam who runs this particular department at my local HL, and she did indeed tell me that it is to keep the stock moving and bringing in new and different kits and manufacturers....

My local HL has had a bunch of Gundam kits stocked since the summer. They are also starting to stock a few Tamiya armor kits that they haven't stocked before.

I strongly doubt they will stock any Meng , Tacom, or new Border Models.  I have one two miles away, I haven't been to it in years, except for Iwata airbrush parts.  Funny, 20 years ago, I went there all the time when they had many more kits by lots of many manufacters, now they are very limited.  They carry older stuff that seems be things that grandma would buy as birthday presents.

Yes, the models that they carry are more intermediate and entry level. Not the expensive fancy advanced stuff.

It is certainly true that both the quality of what's available, and the size of the department has declined over the years. That probably reflects overall sales there. Still, you can get decent stuff sometimes. Airfix 1/48 P-51D and K boxings were available at my store today, $18 each on sale. They're $25 at SprueBrothers, for example.

My local store started out several years ago with only Revell and AMT kits.  They now have added Atlantis, Gundam, Academy. Lindberg, Airfix, and a few Tamiya.

Our local store seems to do a mass sell once a year. I susspect it's to move out old stock in lew of newer. I'll always threatning to buy the old Revell B-17. but I just can't bring myself to spend around $30 for it (after the coupon). It comes and goes and I keep promising myself I'll get it but there's always that AM or PE I'd rather have.

I notice they seem to have something new every once in a while and their car section is stocked. There is always one to two other people picking something out every time I go so there's still plenty of intrest here.

Many years ago, they had good kits.  I once got a huge, 1/350 Polar Lights C-57D space ship there and only recently got around to building it.  They also used to have a lot of Tamiya aircraft and armour.  But these days, there is nothing I would buy there except supplies.  Last year I bought a Bandai Star Wars kit there, just to see what it was like.  I was disappointed, it was more like a toy, than a modeling kit.

Sprue Brothers is getting most of my business now.

This particular store carries mostly Revell kits. They do have a few Bandai Star Wars themed kits, a Tamiya armored kit or two, and a few Academy and Lindberg models.  I was surprised to see my store now stocks Mr. Hobby primer and clear flat spray.
