Here is my 1:24 scale Pietenpol, using a Model A engine from a 1:24 car kit.

This is an educated guess, but I'd say it's a Morane-Saulnier MS.230:

It was a parasol design, two-seat trainer. I remember it from "The Blue Max". An MS.230 was used for the experimental fighter that Stachel takes up and crashes. The front cockpit was faired over for the film.
