You can use either one, as long as you're airbrushing/rattlecanning the clear coat and not brushing it on. For clearcoating most things, I'm partial to MRP clear coats, which are all lacquers. No issues with any paint they have been applied over. When you're airbrushing, the parts of the lacquer that would ordinarily attack paint have mostly evaporated by the time the lacquer even hits the surface.
As a side note on the subject, I just recently started building a car again after not building cars for a while, and I tried MCW enamels for the first time. If you want a really spectacular, one shot gloss without having to use a clearcoat...those are an excellent option. It rivals a 2K gloss, without all of the nasty toxicity that goes along with 2K paints.
