You can use either one, as long as you're airbrushing/rattlecanning the clear coat and not brushing it on.  For clearcoating most things, I'm partial to MRP clear coats, which are all lacquers.  No issues with any paint they have been applied over.  When you're airbrushing, the parts of the lacquer that would ordinarily attack paint have mostly evaporated by the time the lacquer even hits the surface.

As a side note on the subject, I just recently started building a car again after not building cars for a while, and I tried MCW enamels for the first time.  If you want a really spectacular, one shot gloss without having to use a clearcoat...those are an excellent option.  It rivals a 2K gloss, without all of the nasty toxicity that goes along with 2K paints.

I have used both sucessfully.  I still prefer Testors Gloss Coat from the spray can.  I like it because the spay nozzle has a finer hole than hardware store gloss coats, which goes on heavier and tends to obscure finer detail.  If the model has little fine detail the hardware stuff is okay.  Now at the hardware stores I find clear gloss lacquer, acrylic, and enamel.  Even the enamel is all fast dry.

Can't speak for a car type finish, but I have used Alclad Aqua Gloss an acrylic,or Testors Gloss which is a lacquer over Tamiya paints without problems.

I also have used Vallejo Gloss which is a acrylic.

Finished painting a car body with Tamiya Acrylic paint (X-1 Black).  Looking for advice on Gloss Coat to use.  Do I need to stick with an acrylic gloss or can lacquer based gloss be used?
