Squadron 2005 catalog
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 8:35 PM
Now, dont get me wrong, I like Squadron. I like the catalog. But I had a couple of gripes.
it seems like everything is a lot more expensive than last year. I can relate to the inflation and whatnot, but you'd think that not having to have a store front and buying things wholesale, they might be cheaper than your local. but no.
The kit of the year is apparently the Trumpeter Liberty ship. ok, Ive never seen this kit in the store, built, or in a magazine. Im sure its great and all, but how wide is the appeal for this type of model? at least with the Hornet last year I might conceivalby build one some time, not likely, but I just might ... but this one, I dont know. Maybe it is the best kit this year, but not for me.
Ok, one more thing... the one thing I kept turning the page and expecting to see, wasnt there... DML (dragon) doesnt have ANY space in there at all! whats up with that? their recent kits are great, everyone seems to like them, more or less. They still sell them on the website, so why arent they in the catalog? Not in the 1/35 area, or in the ships either.
Well, just wanted to get that off my chest. I know they cant put everything in the catalog, but it just seems like a rather glaring ommision, considering the popularity of some of their recent kits on these forums, like the new tiger and halftrack 3 in 1 kits, and the new PaK 7.5.
Im sure I still may order decals, canopys and books from them, and I would certainly use the website for that anyway, but its nice having that shiny catalog in your hands.

Matt I understand were you are coming from but also you must remember that the Squadron shop is a warehouse shop and not a hobby store. They sell what can move the fastest without sitting in the shelve for a long time.Sometimes companys like Dragon my not fill there order unless they buy the reat of the line or there might be a disturbitor and has a lock on the product to sell.Digger

While, like you, I found no deals in the big catalog- the supplement did have some nice surprises...it doesn't seem to happen often- but when it does I try to jump on it.

I was also surprized by the selection of the Trumpeter Liberty Ship as kit of the year. I'm sure it may be popular with the Naval enthusiasts, but there were a lot of significant Aircraft & Armor kits released that will have a much broader audience. Will be interesting to see which kit gets the FSM award.

I have done alot of business with Squadron and will return again. They have the best selection of modeling/reference books. I have not seen any other modeling company out there could match their selections.

Handed the catalog to the wife this morning with a few things high lighted, maybe I'll get something from Santa. I am also stumped at why that particular kit is KOY.

I'll tell you one thing, I was sure getting more and more depressed with each flip of the page. $94. $85. $120. $55. $499. No wonder I stick to Mustangs and Thunderbolts. They're still (for the most part) the cheapest kits available! I used to look forward to new releases but not so much anymore. Not when something you finally want just came out for $120. I love my hobby but those prices are just insane.

I havn't done business with Squadron for a few years now. I used to couldn't wait to get the supplements and get a bunch of ship models for under $10 or a bunch of planes for $1.99. But after a few years of that dwindling, their higher prices, stock outs, and IMO, poor website, I moved onto other suppliers that I like better.

Squadron is my favorite place to order from. I will not even think about ordering from GM since they are not very good at what they do I only use them to buy the big Tamiya paint. And I like there website better then GM since they only have listed the stuff they have instock and not out of stock things like GM. And there search is much better then GM. But I do not like them not having DML in the catalog and having to look on the website to check one thing. But other then that I will stay with Squadron for a long time.

What irritates me about Squadron is that when I look at the flyer and see stuff on sale, and go to the site to order that same stuff, it's never on the sale price.

But do they give you the sale price when you order, or do you stop there?

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

I've ordered from the catalog and gotten the sale price, if it is on sale. I've always had good dealings with the folks a Squadron.

About squadon kit of the year if you will notice one thing and that is it is like the academy awards.About the last 3-4 months when a new kit arrives and has a lot of detail to it or is just big it sticks to the minds of people no matter if there was a kit that was better and brought out at the begining or middle of the year. Why they do this is beyond me but they do.Just look at last years kit of the year the accurate advenger which came out near the last of the year.As far as what I like about squadron is when you order paint, you can see what color they have before you buy.Digger

Nope, I never carried it any further. There's a lot to be said for consistency, and personally I just chose not to endorse a business that can't update a simple webpage. I've ordered from them before, but I've found other places that a) carry a greater variety of items and b) carry it for less.

If you look at Squadorn's policy page it states:

"The website prices reflect the Catalog price, however, customers will automatically receive the lower Squadron Mail Order Supplement (sale) price when applicable. This price adjustment will be made at time of shipping."

You have to remember that Squadron has been around long before the internet and I think that is evident in the way they do business. Meaning that they seem to place more emphasis on the catalogue than on the web page (IMO).

The reason they do this is to get you to subscribe to their catalog and supplements....for $5. So if you don't get these, basically- you don't see the deals....but you still get the prices. Seems a weird policy to me-- I would think you would advertise sales to get more business....GM does-- but then they also charge you for their catalog. Seems a silly policy to me....

To be honest-- I don't ever remember paying $5 for Squadron's catalogs and mailers, but I get them.

Hi all,

For starters, I have no problem with Squadron considering the Liberty ship kit the kit of the year. It looks like a fine kit, and if it doesn't have a wider appeal, it should -- those ships carried a number of the planes and armored vehicles that we like to make little replicas of now. Smile [:)]

However, Squadron almost never gets my business. I get better prices ordering from Roll Models (for example), and I get more convenience heading to my local hobby store.

Regards,

-Drew

Ive bought a fair amount of stuff from squadron. Some of their stuff is a little high and as a result I have started shopping around. But for my needs over here they are still my basic supplier and the first company I turn to. Having a catalog here to look at doesnt hurt them either.

There is one major thing to remember about Squadron and that is what they do sell.It is not the kits but is service.I have bought from other companys and have not the service that Squadron puts out.If there is one thing Iearned while driving a truck,it is not the price but the service. Some companys say they have it in stock but when you go to order it is out of stock and you do know untill your order is not filled or the cob webs have taken over the mail box.Half the time some of these companys won't tell you untill you contact them. This is not true with Squadron and if I lived in some remote places in the U.S.,I know that I can count on Squadron to get it there. If you buy around $50.00 of stuff from Squadron they send you a catalog and suppliments. This is not true with others and the suppliments help to see the new kits that are going in to stock which is very helpfull.I can go on and on but it is up to the people who are buying. As for me Squadron has the best service of them all.Digger

I've had nothing but good experience with Squadron. Even when I am not ordering much I like having the catalog and supplements around so I have a good idea of what is out there.

Squadron is usually my first choice for ordering stuff. I've had some disappointing experiences with other vendors when ordering things, usually something listed as "in stock" when its not. So, they've gotten my business. That said, I don't really give the catalog/supplements much more than a glance over, I guess I just rather use the web and search for what I want, not scan a crowded page.

Still, I'm starting to look at some other online vendors, because there are some things that Squadron doesn't stock that I'm looking for sometimes.
