does anyone keep a clean work area

i need chaos to work i can not work if it is neat
i always know in the mess if 1 thing was moved
my wife took out 1 file folder form a pile i had
thrown all over my desk and i knew

well im glad that im not the only one out there

wingnut i love the shelves i may build some for the side of my desk i seem to be getting more paint than i have room

great work areas all around

trust me i know what its like to work on the dining room table luckily i moved into a bigger place

The shelves go together ion no time. I used 1’4” balsa and made ‘em just like stairs. Made 3 stringers and covered them with treads and risers to make shelves about 1 ½ “ deep. CA glue and Zip-Kicked and done in less than an hour.




But as you can see in the other pics, I have made a new one that has 33% more space. It is still only 3 shelves high but a foot longer. The “step” shelves were 3’ due to only finding balsa in that length. Home depot had this nice pre-cut wood… not basswood but very similar so a bit more sturdy than balsa… in 1 1/2x4/1/4 and 1/8” luan plywood available in a 2x4 foot size. 3” cleats cut and glued to the sides using a scrap as a spacer, glue to the back board. A little glue on the back edge of the shelf and slide it in place. CA glue and Zip-Kicker again and less than an hour. Mine were limited in height due to wanting it to fit under the top shelf but now I have extra work surface to mess up. Double stick tape holds it to the wall.




BTW… I just looked at your profile. Is the food by you similar to that in New Orleans being only a couple of hours away? Best food in the world! Cooking is another hobby of mine and I will put my etouffe and jambalaya up against anybody’s!

(And the “between builds/Had to make new shelves clean-up is only temporary… trust me)

This is my mobile workbench (M*A*S*H ?) - Not neat nor tidy, but still workable...

I dont think any of those are too messy, after all they are WORK stations. I have not eaten at my dining roomtable in a year and a half! I also have an R/C work station in my bedroom. It's a solid core door slab on two sawhorses!
wing_nut - I kinda like your paint shelves, how did you make them?

Just a tip for all of you guys working off of sheets of plywood and old doors. Look in your phonebook yellow pages or on-line for used equipment or used industial equipment warehouses then call them and see what they have for desks. I live not too far from Cleveland Ohio and there are two places I go to there that have virtual mountains of used desks for $25.00 to $50.00 each. I picked up a monstrous wood executive desk for my computer work station that was like brand new for $25.00 and a metal dest for my modeling for another $25.00 and yet another metal executive desk for one of my kids for, you guessed it, $25.00. As many of you are well aware that is less than the cost of many model kits these days and it beats the heck out of a sheet of plywood.

I see your table top has the official carved for comfort feature lacking in most tables!

Joe... are those cleats for good footing when airbrushing or stomping the rivet detail back in after putty/sanding?

not sure what MDF boards mean arki30. all i know is that they're basically drywall thats resistant to fire. it was supposed to go up in the front part of the basement, but we never got it. now im on the neverending quest to find that old science lab table to replace it.

BTW- you should see my dad's portion on the other side, and the spray area!!

I occasionally go through and put everything back into place. Did that Saturday as a matter of fact. Some times it helps me to clear my mind. Most of the time it is a mess though.

I tend to keep my work area fairly neat and tidy. The only time that is not the case is when I'm actually working on a model. Outside of those times, everything has its place, and I like it that way.

I keep it reasonably clean. I try to put back tools etc. after I have used them.
But it's not very tidy....

Sorry to buck the trend but yes I do try to keep it neat and clean.

What is a clean and neat work area? I am not familiar with that term.

Mine looks like a tornado went over it.

Gringe, what exactly is your table? It looks like a bunch of MDF boards stacked on top of each other. Am I seeing that right?
