Ideas for a modeling desk?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 16, 2006 9:30 AM
Well my house receive about 5 inches of water from Hurricane Katrina, and all our furniture had to go, so I'm taking advantage of unfortunate circumstances and trying to design my own modeling desk. Previously I worked on a normal desk (about 1.5 feet by 4 feet), but now that I have a chance to rebuild I would like to have a modeling desk that would cater more to modeling uses. I haven't taken exact measurements, but I believe I have about 4 feet of wall, and if my parents ok it, I might get the corner, so I'd have the corner with 4 feet of wall on either side. First off, would you say a corner desk is better than one on a wall? Second, any ideas for material to use, contstruction techniques, etc. would be great. Oh forgot to mention I have never built a desk before (maybe from a kit but that was easy); the only big thing I've built with wood was a bench swing out of 2x4's and 1x2'sBig Smile [:D]. Any help would be appreciated.

first it is a shame you had to lose all that to gain a modeling deskSad [:(]

The corner will allow you more desk area, without losing a lot of floor space. I would recommend just using pine wood that you can get any any lumber yard or home store. I guess the only advice I can tell you is that the best way to get your diamensions for your new desk is to measure them off your old one, like its height. That may not seem all that important until you sit down and the desk comes up to your chin Big Smile [:D] Other than that, have fun and here is a pic of my desk I built not to long ago, maybe it will help give you some ideas?

Its pretty simple in design. I did that to save money and time, I think I spent about $6 for the whole thing, not counting lumber I already had.

one suggestion that I would like tot make is to attache a magnetic rail (like the ones they use for knives) on the wall to hold your tools.

Hey, I liketha magnetic rail idea.

Also, On my desk, a few other fixtures that I have found nice are; a power strip, a hanger for the airbrush, and a bench vise mounted to the desk.

If you really want to go "all-out", pick up a corner section of Formica countertop from your local hardware store, and a pair of 3 drawer cabinets. I spent about $200 total on my workbench and have more space than I've ever had before.

I find working in the corner of the bench allows me to get closer to the project, and I seem to lose fewer parts too.

My wife and I are in the first stages of having a house built.  Luckily, she understands my hobby(to a point) and has no problem with me having my own model room.  The article in the Nov '04 FSM is my inspiration on how to design the room.  One thing I will be adding is hot and cold water(the room is next to where the laundry room will be).

It'll be a month or so before ground is broke, but I will post progress pics.
