Dallas, TX - New Hobby Shop in Town
Posted by Plastic_Cross on Friday, October 27, 2006 4:49 PM

Three weeks ago I was driving down Preston Rd in N Dallas in my old '92 beater when I nearly received whiplash.  While I was focusing soley on the road, my instinct directed me to a sign posted near the normally dull shopping area.  One word stood out "Hobby".

After I  fixed the crick in my neck, I did a U turn and drove up to the new shop.  It's called Hobby Annex.  I've been there 3 time since.  It's a great shop, I met the very friendly owner yesterday.

I just wanted to post this so that anyone in the Dallas area would know that there's a new place to check out.  I haven't been to the website yet but it is www.hobbyannex.com.

Update - I just checked out the website.  It isn't there yet.

Thanks,

Larry

Yeah, I ran across that place while on vacation in Dallas.  Same basic deal, we were driving back to our hotel after visiting the Cavanaugh Air Museum and saw the sign.  Nice shop, the owner seemed pretty serious about his work.  He was talking about setting up an airbrush station for his customers to use too.

Yea, the Cavanaugh Air Museum.  What a gem, and only 3-4 miles from my home.  Have been living in Dallas for 6 years, but wasn't interested in anything like that until I caught the modeling bug this past summer.  A superb museum.  They just need a few tanks.

Getting back to the new shop - you're right, the owner is a very nice man.  Turns out that armor is his specialty, and he has an excellent selection of some of the the harder to find kits.   He has space in his display case for people to bring in their builds.

He told me that the back room is available for airbrushing, and I think he plans on having a modeling club or clinic on certain Saturdays.

He also did some charity work for the Plano, TX public library system - arranged for model vendors to donate kits for kids and their dads (or moms) to build - sort of a modeling outreach.

I will definitely continue to support this new LHS with my business.

Sounds cool, I drive on Preston road for work most weeks and I go to a church there too.  Where abouts is it on Preston Road?  South of NWest highway or what?

Thanks for the info, I'm visiting Dallas in Dec, and will make it a stop. The Cavanuagh museum is great BTW, was there this summer. I think I'll try out the Love Airfield one this time around.

Been there too.... the airbrush station you mention is in place and FREE to use... As long as you are a customer, you can use his stuff for free.  Really good selection of model kits, especially if you are looking for armor, aircraft, figures, aftermarket, etc.  Not many ships, but easilty the best selection in the DFW area.... Overall one of the best shops I have seen for model builders.

If you haven't been to the store - do yourself a favor.... also has really good prices for the most part.  Last week they had a "buy 1 get 1 for half price" on everything.  I loaded up the basket.

Also - go look at the huge diorama about 3 feet wide  - awesome work!  The website is up  www.hobbyannex.com

If you look in the showcase at the shop on the east wall, you'll see my Academy M12 on display

I was in Dallas for Xmas, but forgot about this thread and missed going to the shop! I did get to the Love field Flight museum, spoke at length to a gentlemen volunteer there that is a retired Brig. General with the Marines Reserves, flew Dauntless Dive bombers in WWII and Corsairs in Korea. He was a great host to bring the histroy to life.
