What kit in your current stash is the coolest?
Posted by alumni72 on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 2:43 AM

Do you have a kit - maybe two - that you both look forward to building and at the same time are maybe a bit afraid to tackle?  Imposing or intimidating, maybe?  Or something out of the ordinary that is perhaps the coolest or most unique kit you've ever seen?  Or maybe you're afraid that if you screw it up you'll never be able to find another one?

For me it's that Lindbergh 1/32 PT-109 kit that I've had for years. I can't even remember where I got it - but I'd venture a guess that it cost a pretty penny when I got it.  The main deck part was so large that when I picked it up out of the box it bent at a thin joint.  I don't know if it intimidates me because it's so huge that I want to do it justice, or because it's so huge that I don't know where the blazes I'll be able to put it after it is finished!

A close second is the ESCI 1/9 Zundapp motorcyle w/ sidecar.  I saw it at a friend's house and I immediately coveted it.  (I think it was the rather large MG-34 that caught my fancy the most.)  A few years later I saw it on the shelf of a shop that I didn't normally go to, and I snatched it up right away.  And there it sits with the rest of my stash...

The coolest in my stash is actually my next project that I will start in February.  It is the HUGE 1/16  Trumpeter T-34/85 Mod. 1944 Russian armor.  It has complete interior details and it is simply the most detailed kit I ever see OOB.  And I'm currently making the research and gathering all the information to SUPER DETAIL that bastard.  Can't wait to start.

Yann... what timing!  My stash is pretty small and needless to say...all aircraft.... expect for 1 kit. So my coolest kit is a 1/16 T-34/76 1942.  It will be my first piece of armor when I get to it... and I want to try and do it this year.  Actually  I think I did a Bandai(?) Tiger 35 years ago, which is well beyond the statute of limitations.

Coolest as in rare is a 1/24 scale ITC/Ringo T92 US airborne light tank. Only two of the actual vehicles were made and it was a unique looking light tank.

Coolest as in value is a 1/16 scale Tamiya Tiger I full R/C kit I won in an online contest. Really neat kit that I got for free.

Edited 1-11-07  Without a doubt, my Tamiya 1/350 Bismarck with all 3 PE detail sets from White Ensign Models.  This is a project that I'm really looking forward too, and also dreading at the same time.  It's going to go on a shelf just above the 50" Plasma TV in the family room and will be a centerpiece for my collection.  My skills aren't where they need to be yet, so it will be a while before I build it, but I look at the full blown Bismarck build as being my "Holy Grail" so to speak.

Hmmm... I would have to say probably the latest few Dragon 1/35 armor aquisitions in my stash, which would include

Nashorn
PzKpfw IV Ausf D
M4A1
M4A3
M4A3E8

I'm trying to get my armor building, painting and weathing skills up on my simpler kits before I even think about touching those.  LOL

My Pro Modeler Ju88C-6 and Stuka get honorable mention.... Big Smile [:D]

OMG, how could I forget!

Tamiya 1/350 Bismarck with all 3 of the White Ensign Models PE sets.  That project just intimidates the heck out of me.  Shock [:O]

I know about the intimidation thing. Mine is an Iron Shipwright 1/350 scale resin USS Indianapolis that my dear wife got me for christmas a couple of years ago. One of these days.......

The one I think is the coolest is the Academy F-18D or the Tamiya F-14. The F-18 will be a great build, but the space needed for such a build is a bit much, and till the little lady and I get a place, I just don't have the room... soon though, very soon Evil [}:)]

For me it's the relatively mundane Dragon PzIV Ausf. E, which is still leagues above my skill level. Just looking at the box on my shelf makes me dizzy.

I have the DML 1/35 SCUD launcher.  I normally do 1/72 planes, so this thing is HUGE, and has a lot of parts.

My coolest airplane is a 1/71 ANT 25.  Really crude old kit, but one of my favorite subjects.  I want to wait until I can devote the time to build it perfectly.

For me it's probably this one...

I purchased it from a mail-order hobby shop in the UK about 2 years ago. I'm guessing it's about 1/7th scale, all resin (nicely molded) with white metal details. Really looking forward to starting it.

Also, my Trumpeter 1/32 MiG 21 with a resin cockpit from Black Box looks pretty neat too.

For me it's the Heller 1/400 Tirpitz. The camo pattern, ship rigging, PE, etc. A bit intimidating for me.

Gotta say that would be my 1/32nd scale Trumpeter N/AW A-10A; it's HUGE! It's probably the biggest box I've got in my stash right now, and it's got a ton of parts, including resin engines and metal landing gear. All I've been brave enough to do so far is open the box and look at it (haven't even opened any of the bags yet!), but I've already said I'll build it for the Trumpeter build, so I guess I'll have to get started on it sooner or later!

1/48th Monogram A-37 Dragonfly: 95% (so close!); 1/35th Academy UH-60L: 90%; 1/35th Dragon "Ersatz" M10: 75%; 1/35th DML E-100 Super Heavy Tank: 100%; 1/48 YF-12A, 95%; 1/48 U-2R: 90%; 1/48 B-58 Hustler: 50%; 1/32 F-117, 50%; 1/48 Rafale M: 50%; 1/48 F-105D: 75%; 1/48 SOS A-1H Skyraider: 50%; 1/48th Hobby Boss Su-27: 50%; 1/16th Revell Lamborghini Countach: 75%; 1/12th Otaki Lamborghini Countach: 25%; Tamiya 1/35th M3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle: 25%

Mine is the relatively ordinary Italeri RSO/O1; I'm simply in love with it. I've got the Friul tracks and I'm ready to go, but i won't touch it until somebody slips in an Eduard PE set on ebay. I haven't seen a set since the one I lost out on over a year ago. And I check a few times daily. This RSO will come alive when I find that PE set. It has become my Grail. Until that day, all the other models will just be practice.

Great question!  I'm not in the big leagues so for me the coolest and most intimidating is my Dragon Tiger I Late (3 in 1).  The sheer number of parts, the metal and photoetch parts, the choice in decals and even all the different options have held me back for some time.  It was actually the 2nd kit I bought after getting back into modelling and when I opened the box I was shocked!  What a difference from the old Tamiya T-34/76 (1942) that I started with just a month earlier!  I swallowed my pride and decided to shelf that kit until I had waaay more practice (which I'm still working on)!  Oh, and I have to put zimmerit on it......Shock [:O]

Nice deal is an understatement!!!!! When I got the kit home and started researching F-15's I found out this kit retailed for $130.00 to $150.00 and some places for as much as $170.00. I count myself very lucky!Big Smile [:D]

Take your time with that one, its not the best engineered kit in the world.

As for me, I'd have to say any of my larger kits by far have the most 'cool' factor;

Trumpeter BR-52 (built and basecoated this one, going to continue work on it around March)

Trumpeter Morser Karl with railway transporters

Trumpeter FAUN panzertransporter

Tamiya FAMO with trailer.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for these large kits.

I am taking my time with this one.  I have been staring at it about 4 years now, and haven't started it yet!

Thanks for the heads up on the engineering.  I will make sure I test fit everything.

i guess the most intimidating would be a tossup.  the 1/700 and the 1/350 uss arizona's that sit in the stash.  the rigging is something that i cant get my mind around yet.  i began another 1/700 arizona last year and it has become a disaster.

I have a couple Revell 1/24 German cargo trucks from the 1950's- a Krupp Titan and a Bussing 8000S.  I've never made anything automotive before (glossy paint finish & over 300 parts each) so they would me my most anticipated kits.
