No. Some things are just too big or too small outside of certain scales. Not to mention also that I do like my collections to be in sync scalewise. while I do admire the work that others can do in those scales, it is not for me. As far as buying every brand goes, while I may have an affection for a certain piece of hardware, and I will buy all the variants available, it does not mean from all the kitmakers of that item. Some kits are not appealing to me (lets say 1/48 Spitfires/P-40s, or 1/35 Shermans) for whatever reason.

Colonel- you modified your avatar(?)!!

Generally not because I like "one of each". I'm sure I'd be a much better modeler if I focussed more. I was very much that way though with my model RR, insofar as smooth operation is important, but that quality generally has a direct relationship to cost.

Jon- have you ever built "down the scale" on purpose just to see if you could tame the beast?

In aircraft it would be F-111's,  F-15's and A-10's. Although I wont go below 1/72nd scale. The reason I guess is because when I was in the Air Force I worked as a crew chief on the above aircraft.

In armor it would be the M1 tank and any variations. The reason is I just like the looks of the M1 alot.

I'll build any Spitfire- any scale or any make. I just really dig Spitfires.

Same with P-40s to a lesser degree. With those I'll be slightly more selective.

But let me see a Spitfire I don't have on the shelf at the LHS..... I get it!

Therefore, I generally limit myself to one kit for each model and variant I'm planning to build. At some point I may go back and rebuild a "replacement" model particularly if a greatly improved kit gets released (ie, a new Matilda for example), but it would simply be to improve upon the old kit, nothing to do with favorites.

on that note FOSTER, what about duplicate models IE; an american sherman and a lend lease russian sherman?

I've already built an M4A3(76)W American Sherman and if I do build a Lend-Lease Russian Sherman, it will likely be a unique M4A2 variant (either a 75mm or 76mm). So technically, while one could say I'm planning to build 14 Shermans (or more), they should all be slightly different variants. The same would be true for my Tiger I models. I'll probably end up with five representing the versions Initial, Early, Mid, Late, and Final. Again, this will have nothing to do with a vehicle being a "favorite"...just the types of vehicles produced.

Since I'm now starting to dabble in dioramas, I likely will have a few (very few) duplicate models because there will undoubtedly be a repeat build needed to represent a specific scene. I can easily see several Jeeps or GMC Trucks being built if I end up constructing numerous American dioramas. There could also be duplicate "knocked out" tanks or other pieces of equipment needed in some scenes. It won't make these vehicles favorites of mine - just necessary.

I can understand a modeler finding a favorite subject and building it over and over. I had a buddy in high school...many, many years ago...who must have built at least 20 Peterbuilt trucks. He loved those things! For me, the fun is in building something different every time, but that's just me...

I've built every make of the Abrams tank short of the newer DML M1A2SEP, and have not finished the M1A1AIM yet.

Hey DURR,

For me it's the Willy's Jeep. So far I have one in 1/72, 1/35, and 1/24. I found a 1/16, but too much cha-ching. What can I say, I love dem Jeeps!

Model building isn't about patience, it's about passion.
